The development of anthropogenic processes has significantly increased the amount of organic compounds present in wastewater. The presence of fertilizers, detergents, sewage, industrial, agricultural or clinical residues can cause serious environmental damage. Urban wastewater treatment plants (UWTP) have been considered as hot spots for the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) into the environment. There is a growing interest in investigating the role of UWTP in the spread of ARB and the dissemination of resistant determinants. The present investigation was focused on the use of metaproteomics to obtain information on the vast community of microbial species colonizing wastewaters as well as on their antibiotic resistance patterns.
