Food insecurity has increased in Argentina since 2015. Based on the analysis of the Argentinian food supply chains and their interactions with the economic and political system, this thesis intends to highlight the structural reasons from a political economy perspective. The investigation shows that the dependency of the economy on the global food supply chains creates the conditions for the economic crisis, reinforced by the external shocks since 2015. On the other hand, the substitution of the domestic supply chains by the global ones, associated with a lack of technological change in the domestic chains and the market domination of agri-food oligopolies, generates a recession on the domestic food market. All the factors combined has led to the rise of food insecurity, regardless the public policies to counter this trend.
