Tradizione Celtica e Dottrine Teosofiche in In the Land of Youth di James Stephens

The myths and sagas of Celtic Ireland are a great source of investigation of human nature. The authors of the Celtic Revival found in those stories rich and stimulating material for the foundation of a new national literature. James Stephens, through his re-writings and modern prose, managed to give those stories a new life. His portrayal of the Irish spirit conveys his love for his land, his people, and his heritage. His understanding of the Gaelic scéala (stories) enabled him to bring the art of the file (poet) to the modern audience, enhancing its features and merging it with his personal narrative style. Irony and digressions are his means to analyse the characters’ psyche. With his writing, Stephens created a modern, relevant reading of the Gaelic myths. His characters are explored through the investigation of their fears, their motivations, and their spiritual progress. Furthermore, his interpretation of the Celtic material was deeply influenced by his study of Theosophy, a mainstream mystical movement of the time. Despite the relevance of Theosophy in Stephens’ writing has been attested, there is a lack of in-depth analysis of the theosophical elements in his works. The aim of this dissertation is to compare In the Land of Youth with its Middle-Irish source material, Echtra Nerai (The Adventures of Nera) and to analyse the elements of the novel that can be referred to the influence of Theosophical doctrines. In the Land of Youth represents one of James Stephens’ adaptations of Celtic material. He found in Nera the embodiment of a common man and in portraying him, he highlighted his strength and weakness, making him a modern hero. Stephens’ purpose was not to celebrate a hero, but to represent a human character, who was able to overcome his fears following the teachings of Theosophy. Moreover, Stephens’ interpretation of Echtra Nerai was deeply influenced by his mystical outlook. The magical element of the story, with the otherworld, spirits, and prophetic visions, can be associated with the occult practices of Theosophy. The otherworld is interpreted as a spiritual and psychological dimension, where the protagonist must operate to restore harmony and achieve spiritual enlightenment. The representation of two opposite dimensions, the síd (otherworld) and the real world, can be seen as the conciliation of contraries, a major theosophical theme. The present dissertation aims at showing how Stephens’ novel In the Land of Youth represents the merging of different influences: from Gaelic legends to mysticism, from Platonism to modernist literature, from eastern philosophy to psychology.

I miti e le saghe dell’Irlanda celtica sono un’importante fonte di investigazione della natura umana. Gli autori del Celtic Revival hanno trovato in quelle storie materiali ricchi e stimolanti per la nascita di una nuova letteratura nazionale. James Stephens, con i suoi adattamenti e la sua prosa moderna, è riuscito a dare a quelle storie nuova vita. La sua rappresentazione dello spirito irlandese trasmette l’amore per la sua terra, il suo popolo e la sua tradizione culturale. La sua conoscenza delle scéala (storie) gaeliche gli ha consentito di portare l’arte del file (poeta) ad un pubblico moderno, evidenziandone le caratteristiche e mescolandola con il suo stile personale. L’autore analizza la psiche dei suoi personaggi attraverso l’ironia e le digressioni. Con la sua scrittura, Stephens ha dato un’interpretazione moderna e rilevante dei miti gaelici. L’autore analizza i suoi personaggi attraverso le loro paure, motivazioni ed evoluzione spirituale. Inoltre, la sua lettura del materiale celtico era fortemente influenzata dallo studio della Teosofia, un movimento mistico all’epoca molto popolare. Malgrado la rilevanza della Teosofia nella scrittura di Stephens sia stata riconosciuta, mancano analisi approfondite dei temi teosofici delle sue opere. Lo scopo di questa tesi è di confrontare In the Land of Youth con la sua opera originale in medio-irlandese, Echtra Nerai (Le Avventure di Nera) e di analizzare gli elementi del romanzo che possono essere ricondotti all’influenza delle dottrine teosofiche. In the Land of Youth rappresenta uno degli adattamenti di materiale celtico scritti da James Stephens. L’autore ha trovato in Nera l’incarnazione dell’uomo comune e nel ritrarlo, ne ha accentuato punti di forza e di debolezza, rendendolo un eroe moderno. L’obiettivo di Stephens non era quello di celebrare un eroe, ma piuttosto quello di rappresentare un personaggio umano, in grado di superare le sue paure seguendo gli insegnamenti teosofici. Inoltre, l’interpretazione di Stephens di Echtra Nerai è stata profondamente influenzata dalla sua visione mistica. L’elemento magico della storia, con il mondo ultraterreno, gli spiriti e le visioni profetiche, può essere associato alle pratiche occulte della Teosofia. Il mondo ultraterreno è visto come una dimensione spirituale e psicologica, dove il protagonista deve operare per ristabilire l’armonia e raggiungere l’elevazione spirituale. La rappresentazione di due dimensioni opposte, il síd (mondo ultraterreno) e il mondo reale, può essere considerata come riconciliazione degli opposti, un importante tema teosofico. Questa tesi si pone l’obiettivo di mostrare come il romanzo di Stephens rappresenti l’unione di diverse influenze: dalle leggende gaeliche al misticismo, dal platonismo alla letteratura modernista, dalla filosofia orientale alla psicologia.
