As Formas de Tratamento. Studio pragmatico della visione dell'altro nella cultura portoghese.

This dissertation aims to understand the functioning of the system of courtesy forms of the Portuguese language and to identify how it adapts to the culture of the Lusophone world. As formas de tratamento are, as a matter of fact, used to refer with an allocative form to an "other person" that they themselves help to define and recognize, as well as giving fundamental indications about the type of relationship between the user of the courtesy form and the interlocutor to whom it is referred. The dissertation consists of three chapters. Firstly, the functional classifications of courtesy forms are described citing the different linguists who have approached their analysis in multiple ways and based off different linguistic contexts. The first chapter introduces the theory of linguistic courtesy and its currents, explaining how the system of courtesy forms falls exactly within the framework of pragmatics and this specific branch of it. The second chapter deals with the system of courtesy forms seen from the point of view of Coseriu’s linguistic variations, giving greater emphasis to diachronic and diatopic variation. Finally, the forms of courtesy used in two precise communicative contexts are analysed quantitatively and qualitatively, specifically two political debates chosen according to different characteristics that make them suitable for a subsequent parallel comparison.

Questa dissertazione ha l'obiettivo di comprendere il funzionamento del sistema delle forme di cortesia della lingua portoghese e di individuare come esso si adatta alla cultura del mondo lusofono. As formas de tratamento, infatti, sono usate per riferirsi con una forma allocutiva ad un “altro” che esse stesse aiutano a definire e riconoscere, oltre a dare anche indicazioni fondamentali sul tipo di relazione intercorrente tra l’utilizzatore della forma di cortesia e l’interlocutore alla quale è riferita. La dissertazione è composta da tre capitoli. Vengono descritte inizialmente le classificazioni funzionali delle forme di cortesia, citando i diversi studiosi che ne hanno approcciato l’analisi in molteplici modi e basandosi su differenti ambiti linguistici. Il primo capitolo introduce la teoria della cortesia linguistica e le sue correnti, spiegando come il sistema delle forme di cortesia cada esattamente all’interno dell’ambito della pragmatica e di questo suo ramo. Il secondo capitolo affronta il sistema delle forme di cortesia visto dal punto di vista delle variazioni linguistiche di Coseriu, dando maggiore rilievo alla variazione diacronica e a quella diatopica. Infine, vengono analizzate qualitativamente e quantitativamente le forme di cortesia usate in due precisi contesti comunicativi, ovvero due dibattiti politici selezionati in base a diverse caratteristiche che li rendono adatti ad un successivo confronto parallelo.
