"Se per mare si soffre o non si soffre": A Comparison Between 20th Century Italian and Irish Migration Literature

This thesis starts by introducing its central theme of migration through an historical summary of the major periods of emigration from Italy and from Ireland. In this introductory part, moreover, several literary texts are analysed in order to outline the main features characterising both Italian and Irish cultures and in order to understand how they influenced the migratory phenomenon. The two central chapters, instead, are devoted to a comparative two-by-two analysis of James Joyce's and Luigi Pirandello's short stories. In particular, the first chapter focuses on Joyce's Eveline and Pirandello's Nell'albergo è morto un tale, two stories with women protagonists whom, despite their different ages, never left their homes, while now they have to emigrate to the American continent. These women lack the courage to leave, but the analysis shows that they are not weak characters: they are sensitive ones. The other characters, in fact, look strong but, on the contrary, they are often selfish and careless. The second chapter, instead, concentrates on Joyce's A Painful Case and Pirandello's Lontano. The former is the story of a Dubliner who hates his own city and fellow-citizens, so that he lives in loneliness and marginalisation. The latter is the story of a Norwegian sailor who has to accept Sicily as his new homeland even if he feels unappreciated by Sicilian people and dislikes their culture. The comparison between the two short stories shows that the condition of exile does not only affect the protagonists ¿ who are or behave as they were immigrants ¿, but also many native characters who, for different reasons, cannot conform to their society's demands. Through this literary comparisons, the thesis highlights several common features between the Italian and the Irish culture (e.g. the Catholic mentality, the difficult economic conditions, the strong family ties etc.) and examines how they influence the characters' behaviours and choices, also about migration.

Dopo una panoramica storica e letteraria del fenomeno migratorio che, nel Ventesimo secolo, ha riguardato l'Italia e l'Irlanda accomunandone le vicende, questa tesi dedica i suoi due capitoli centrali all'analisi di ¿ rispettivamente ¿ due racconti di James Joyce e due di Luigi Pirandello, confrontati a coppie sia per quanto concerne i contenuti sia per quanto concerne la forma. Nel primo capitolo, per esaminare in particolare l'emigrazione, sono messi a confronto Eveline e Nell'albergo è morto un tale, due storie di donne che, pur non avendo mai viaggiato, devono emigrare in America e se ne sentono mancare la forza. Nel secondo capitolo, per soffermarsi invece sull'immigrazione, ci si occupa di A Painful Case e di Lontano. La prima è la storia di un dublinese che detesta la propria città e si comporta da emarginato come se non fosse nato in quel luogo e non vi appartenesse, mentre la seconda è la storia di un norvegese portato dal caso in Sicilia e costretto a farne la sua nuova casa anche se in condizione di solitudine. L'analisi comparata di questi racconti ha dato risultati inattesi. La prima comparazione ha, infatti, mostrato che quelli delle due protagoniste non sono i personaggi più deboli, bensì quelli più sensibili, che si fanno carico della sofferenza e dei problemi altrui senza riuscire a proseguire egoisticamente per la propria strada come fanno tutti gli altri. La seconda comparazione ha, invece, messo in luce il fatto che la condizione di esilio non riguarda soltanto gli immigrati, ma anche molti nativi che non riescono ¿ per ragioni diverse ¿ a sentirsi a proprio agio nella società in cui sono nati. Nel complesso, la tesi si serve della letteratura per tratteggiare somiglianze e differenze fra le culture italiana e irlandese. In quest'ottica, la tematica della migrazione ha permesso a diversi fattori comuni (le difficili condizioni economiche, il Cattolicesimo, i forti legami famigliari ecc.) di emergere in tutta la loro importanza.
