This thesis details the work undertaken by Julian Evans at the University of Montpellier 2 in France, and Kyoto University in Japan, between February and July 2013. Since September 2011, Julian has studied the international master's course ?MaMaSELF? (Master in Materials Science Exploring Large-Scale Facilities) at the University of Rennes 1 in France and the University of Turin in Italy, under the Erasmus Mundus scheme, and this project represents the ?final stage of the course. Here, powder samples and thin films of several brownmillerite-structure oxides were synthesised, and analysed chiefly by X-ray difraction.
