Deafness and Silence. A Translation Proposal of Ilya Kaminsky's Deaf Republic

The aim of my thesis is that of proposing a translation of Ilya Kaminsky's poetry collection Deaf Republic, published in 2019. The first chapter focuses on a literary introduction to the work, concentrating on the author and the main literary features of the collection, which were considered to be relevant for the translation. The second chapter presents my translation proposal for a selection of poems from Deaf Republic, chosen on the basis of their meaning in the narration and their features in translation. The third and final chapter concentrates on a translation commentary. The main translation issues were analysed following a functionalist model, therefore grouping translation problems belonging to the same area of interest. This final section does not only explain translation choices, but it also includes comparisons between the translation proposed in my work and that published by La Nave di Teseo, translated by Giorgia Sensi. ​
