Abstract

The reference values are born together with laboratory tests, no result has indeed a meaning " ever" , but only as it refers to a particular context and therefore , in general, in relation to a physiological situation . These values can be associated with a good health condition or specific pathophysiological situations : it is important the definition of the population that have been used to obtain them. Hence the need to clearly define the criteria for the choice of reference for individuals who represent a reference population from which the sample is selected a group of reference on these subjects making measurements that allow us to obtain reference values that will a certain distribution (distribution of reference ) . This distribution should be analyzed with statistical methods in order to obtain an estimate of the reference limits . The objective of this study is the evaluation of the actual experimental and monocentric "range" of normality of the main hormones measured in the laboratory, " Baldi and Riberi " (TSH , fT4 , calcitonin, TRAb , AbTPO , ACTH, cortisol , DHEA -S, PRL , FSH , LH, estradiol ( if female) , total testosterone (if male ) , aldosterone , PRA , PTH , inhibin B, SHBG , IGF -1, AMH , androstenedione , 17 OH progesterone , vitamin D compared with those proposed by the manufacturers of reagents used for the assay. The study took place at San Giovanni Battista's Hospital of Turin, in particular the hormonal determinations are made by the SC Clinical Biochemistry ( central laboratory " Baldi and Riberi ") while the blood sampling was carried out at the Blood Bank , it has also collaborated with STIVI study (lifestyles) conducted by the CPO Piemonte , an intervention designed to break down the main barriers that people encounter to implement healthier behaviors. The results show statistically significant differences for certain hormones . The reference range in use does not necessarily have to be replaced with the one obtained from our work , the optimum situation is the expected correlation between reported and evaluated.
