Fare e disfare il genere: le possibilità oltre il sistema binario

Gender studies have in recent years increasingly considered the realities beyond the male-female binarism and cisgender identity framework, considering how the experiences of people who do not fit into a cisgender and binary gender identity have contributed and are contributing to changing and expanding our concept of gender. In my thesis, I aim to explore what possibilities for gender expression exist beyond the cisgender and binary system, what aspirations and goals are pursued through expressions of gender identity and performance, and what reactions are observed within social interactions. To do this, I will explore in the first chapter of theoretical framework the meaning of gender-related concepts (distinction between sex and gender, identity, role, expression and gender binarism), referring to the main theories that have emerged in gender studies and by briefly and partially tracing their history. I will then set out the concept of "doing gender" and the theory of performativity, drawing in particular on the work of West and Zimmerman and Butler. Building on these theories, I aim in chapter two to explore the possibilities of gendering beyond binarism, taking up some anthropological research that explores non-binary identities beyond our time and space, and by describing which gender identities fall under the umbrella term 'transgender'. In chapter three, I will then outline the theories and empirical research that have specifically investigated the possibilities of 'doing', 'remaking' and 'undoing' gender through the expression of one's identity in social interaction. Based on this broad theoretical framework, I will then introduce the research chapter of my thesis, which consists of five paragraphs in which I will present the research chapter. And if so, can we talk about remaking or even undoing gender?". Based on the findings in relation to the various themes identified, I will then attempt to draw up an answer to the initial question in the conclusions of the thesis.

Gli studi di genere hanno negli ultimi anni sempre più considerato le realtà oltre il binarismo uomo donna e il quadro identitario cisgender, valutando come le esperienze delle persone che non si ritrovano in un'identità di genere cisgender e binaria abbiano contribuito e stiano contribuendo a cambiare e ampliare il nostro concetto di genere. Nella mia tesi, mi propongo di esplorare quali sono le possibilità di espressione di genere oltre il sistema cisgender e binario, quali aspirazioni e obiettivi vengono perseguiti con espressioni identitarie e performance di genere, e quali reazioni si osservano all'interno delle interazioni sociali. Per fare ciò, esplorerò nel primo capitolo di inquadramento teorico il significato dei concetti legati al genere (distinzione tra sesso e genere, identità, ruolo, espressione e binarismo di genere), facendo riferimento alle principali teorie nate nell'ambito degli studi di genere e ripercorrendo brevemente e parzialmente la loro storia. Arriverò quindi ad esporre il concetto di “fare genere” e la teoria della performatività, riprendendo in particolare il lavoro di West e Zimmerman e Butler. A partire da queste teorie, mi propongo nel secondo capitolo di esplorare le possibilità di fare genere oltre il binarismo, riprendendo alcune ricerche antropologiche che esplorano le identità non binarie oltre il nostro tempo e il nostro spazio, e descrivendo quali sono le identità di genere che rientrano nel termine ombrello “transgender”. Nel terzo capitolo, traccerò quindi un quadro delle teorie e delle ricerche empiriche che hanno nello specific o indagato le possibilità di “fare”, “rifare” e “disfare” il genere attraverso l'espressione della propria identità nell'interazione sociale. Basandomi su questo ampio quadro teorico, introdurrò quindi il capitolo di ricerca della mia tesi, composta di cinque paragrafi nei quali, a partire dalle esperienze condivise in alcuni spazi online da persone appartenenti alla comunità transgender e non binaria italiana, mi propongo di cercare una risposta alla domanda “è possibile fare genere fuori dal sistema binar io? E se sì, si può allora parlare di rifare o, addirittura, disfare il genere?”. Ogni paragrafo della ricerca sarà dedicato a una tematica emersa dall'analisi del materiale empirico: ricerca di accettazione da parte della rete familiare, percezione da par te della società, comprensione della propria identità transgender, linguaggio, ostacoli burocratico giuridici. A partire da quanto emerso in relazione alle diverse tematiche individuate, cercherò quindi di tracciare nelle conclusioni della tesi una risposta alla domanda di partenza.
