L'eredità del romanzo di Stevenson Lo Strano Caso di Dottor Jekyll e Mr Hyde

La tesi si propone di dimostrare la profondità del romanzo Lo Strano Caso del Dottor Jekyll e di Mr Hyde, romanzo che presenta tematiche ancora attuali. Per fare ciò, presenta una serie di interpretazioni che permettono di analizzare il libro da diversi punti di vista. In particolare, si sofferma sull'evoluzione dei personaggi ed i loro rapporti, con un focus su quello fra Jekyll e Hyde. Prima di tutto, mostra come l'intero romanzo consista in una condanna dell'ipocrisia della società vittoriana, e come l'autore sia stato in grado di sfruttare la propria conoscenza ed educazione per sconvolgere i lettori. Ne segue un'estesa analisi della presenza della scienza all'interno del libro, per esempio come chiave per decifrare la relazione fra Jekyll e Hyde, o come strumento per denunciare i valori vittoriani e per creare un'atmosfera inquietante. Per provare quanto pervasivi e complessi i valori vittoriani fossero, Stevenson ha anche sfruttato la filosofia, l'antropologia e la psicologia, che gli hanno permesso di costruire i personaggi e sviluppare la trama, la quale si focalizza sul mistero e sulla teoria del doppio. Stevenson non ha risparmiato neanche la religione in questa sua denuncia, infatti essa è così importante nel libro che, non solo è utile per capire la natura dei personaggi, ma anche la ragioni che delle azioni da loro compiute. Infine, grazie all'analisi di una canzone, questa tesi dimostra anche quanto sia ancora attuale la storia di Jekyll e Hyde oggi.

This thesis aims to show how both deep and still valid Stevenson's novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is. To do so, it presents a variety of interpretations that analyse the book from different points of view. It focuses on the evolution of the characters and on the relationship between them, especially between Jekyll and Hyde. Firstly, it shows how the entire novel condemns the hypocrisy of the Victorian society, and how the author has been able to use his own knowledge and education to unsettle the readers. It follows an extensive analysis of how science has been included in the novel, for example as a key to decode Jekyll and Hyde's relationship, or as a tool to denounce Victorian values and create an uncanny atmosphere. In order to demonstrate how pervasive and intricate false Victorian values were, Stevenson also exploited philosophy, anthropology and psychology to build his characters and develop the plot, which revolves around mystery and the idea of double. He did not even spare religion from his denounce, as religion is so important in the book that it can explain not only the nature of the characters, but also the reasons behind their actions. Finally, through the analysis of a song, this thesis demonstrates how relevant Jekyll and Hyde's story still is today.
