Nel presente lavoro il mio obiettivo è quello di dare conto della vita e degli scritti della cantastorie e autrice Elizabeth Zandile Tshiele, o NoViolet Bulawayo, il cui nome in Italia non è ancora tanto diffuso quanto in altri paesi. La tesi si sviluppa in base ad una struttura volta a presentare al lettore il primo e fino ad ora unico romanzo della scrittrice, C'è bisogno di nuovi nomi partendo dalle lontane origini dello Zimbabwe e arrivando, attraverso gli eventi odierni, a una presentazione del romanzo in questione. Più dettagliatamente, il primo capitolo descrive la storia del paese, dividendola in tre periodi: i millenni prima del XIX secolo, il XIX secolo, e i secoli XX e XXI assieme. Il secondo capitolo inizia con un resoconto della vita e della famiglia dell'autrice quando ancora viveva in Zimbabwe; individua poi le origini della sua passione e ispirazione, e accenna infine alla sua carriera accademica, soffermandosi su un aneddoto riguardo al suo nome d'arte. Il terzo capitolo presenta e riassume alcuni dei racconti brevi di Bulawayo, racconti che per quel che riguarda temi e personaggi hanno una forte connessione con il romanzo stesso. Di quest'ultimo parla appunto il quarto capitolo, offrendo una dettagliata panoramica del testo. In questa parte finale ho voluto inoltre prestare particolare attenzione alla voce narrante, che, per la sua imprevedibilità e fluidità, è solo uno degli aspetti i quali hanno reso lo scritto di Bulawayo per me così interessante da portarmi a sceglierlo come argomento della mia tesi di laurea.
My main purpose in the present work is to give an account of the life and writings Zimbabwean storyteller and author NoViolet Bulawayo, whose name is not as well-established in Italy as it is in other countries. From the point of view of its structure my thesis aims at accompanying the reader on a journey which takes him/her all the way from the remote past of the country of Zimbabwe up to contemporary events and Bulawayo's novel, We Need New Names. More in detail, the first chapter is a description of the history of the country divided into three parts: the millennia before the 19th century, the 19th century itself , and finally the 20th and 21st centuries together. The second chapter starts by providing details about the life and family of the author when she was still living in her country of origin. There follows a discussion of what and who inspired her the most in her storytelling and writing. The final part of the chapter deals with her academic life abroad and provides an explanation of her pen name. The third chapter briefly introduces Bulawayo's short stories and creates a connection with the fourth and final section of my work because in the short stories themselves and in the novel themes and characters are often similar and sometimes coincide. Finally, the last chapter gives a full account of the novel, with an emphasis on the interludes, those chapters where the narrative voice becomes completely, yet very naturally, unpredictable. For me this was the main aspect that made the novel worth reading and writing about.
