Dracula: dalla Transilvania all'Inghilterra vittoriana. La realtà di Bram Stoker rappresentata dal vampiro

Can a gothic novel with its terrifying story and supernatural elements tell the events of a society? This paper focuses on Bram Stoker's Dracula published in 1897, towards the end of the Victorian age. Queen Victoria's reign covered more than a half of the 19th century. That was an epoch characterized by great scientific discoveries and changes in society, although there were also a growing interest in spiritualism and a feeling of social anxiety. Through the combination of folklore, imagination and perceptiveness, Bram Stoker transformed a figure belonging to a distant culture from the British one into a respectable proponent of this era.

Può un romanzo gotico con la sua storia di terrore ed i suoi elementi soprannaturali raccontare gli eventi di una società? L'elaborato è incentrato sul romanzo Dracula di Bram Stoker pubblicato nel 1897, ormai verso la fine dell'età vittoriana. Il regno della regina Vittoria ricoprì più della metà del XIX secolo, un'epoca carattarizzata da grandi scoperte scientifiche e cambiamenti nella società, ma anche da una crescente attenzione per lo spiritismo e da un senso di inquitudine sociale. Unendo folclore, fantasia e spirito di osservazione, Bram Stoker ha trasformato una figura appartenente ad una cultura lontana da quella britannica in un degno rappresentante di questo periodo.
