La Priority Thesis. Riflessioni sul rapporto tra ontologia e metafisica

The Priority Thesis is the thesis by Achille Varzi according to which ontology (understood as the study of what there is) should be prior to metaphysics (understood as the study of the ultimate nature of the entities). It is based on a sharp distinction between the two fields and it entails i) that a metaphysical disagreement between two philosophers does not impair their ontological agreement about the very same entity; ii) that in theory it is possible to proclaim our ontological credo without embarking in further metaphysical speculations. I will show the reasons sustaining this thesis through Varzi's answers to a series of heterogeneous objections directed to: the role and the limitations of philosophy qua ontology, the very distinction between ontology and metaphysics, the priority relation between the two. Then, I will analyse two alternative perspectives which the Italian philosopher has not explicitly considered: the first being the rejection of the possibility of a sharp distinction between ontology and metaphysics, describing it as a ¿myth¿; the second criticising one of the assumptions at the base of Varzi's position, namely the univocal sense of the existential quantifier, proposing a double reading of the quantifier that purports to reconfigure ontology's basic theoretical framework. I will argue that neither is an actual refutation of the Priority Thesis. Eventually, I will advance and defend a proposal, assuming Varzi's thesis and developing from it. I will criticise the sharp distinction between ontology and metaphysics by showing i) that there is the possibility of metaphysical options which oblige to a reconsideration of the previous ontological lists; ii) that a given set of existential claims implies the delimitation of a specific ¿field¿ of metaphysical possibilities, and that therefore it is possible to have an identical ontology compatible with different metaphysics only if these differences are internal to the ¿field¿ of possibilities. At last, I will propose a reformulation of the Priority Thesis in order to overcome the objections, by operating a threefold distinction of the thesis, giving priority to the so called ¿general metaphysical principles¿ without, however, having to erase the priority relation between ontology and metaphysics (strictly understood in Varzi's terms).

La Priority Thesis è la tesi di Achille Varzi secondo la quale l'ontologia (intesa come studio di ciò che c'è) sarebbe prioritaria rispetto alla metafisica (intesa come studio della natura ultima delle entità). Essa si basa sulla distinzione netta tra i due ambiti e comporta i) che un disaccordo metafisico tra due filosofi non infici un loro accordo ontologico rispetto alla medesima entità; ii) che in linea teorica sia possibile fare ontologia senza necessariamente affrontare considerazioni metafisiche successive. Saranno mostrati gli argomenti a favore di questa tesi attraverso le risposte di Varzi ad una serie di obiezioni eterogenee, che vanno ad attaccare: il ruolo e i limiti della filosofia come ontologia, la distinzione stessa tra ontologia e metafisica, la relazione di priorità tra le due. Si presenteranno criticamente due prospettive alternative alla Priority Thesis: la prima che rigetta la possibilità di una distinzione tra ontologia e metafisica definendola un ¿mito¿; la seconda che mette in discussione uno degli assunti di base della posizione varziana, cioè l'univocità dell'interpretazione del quantificatore esistenziale, proponendo una doppia lettura del quantificatore esistenziale volta a reimpostare il quadro teorico di base dell'ontologia. Si argomenterà che entrambe non costituiscono effettive confutazioni alla Priority Thesis. Infine, avanzerò e difenderò una proposta, che assume la tesi varziana e si sviluppa a partire da essa. Criticherò la distinzione netta tra ontologia e metafisica, mostrando (i) che si dà la possibilità di scelte in ambito metafisico che obbligano a un ripensamento delle liste ontologiche di partenza e (ii) che un insieme di asserzioni esistenziali di un determinato tipo ha come conseguenza la delimitazione di un certo ¿campo¿ di possibilità metafisiche, e che dunque una stessa ontologia è compatibile con teorie metafisiche divergenti solo se la divergenza di tali teorie resta interna al ¿campo¿ di possibilità. In conclusione, sarà proposta una riformulazione della Priority Thesis volta a superare le obiezioni che le sono state mosse, operando una tripartizione della tesi, e assegnando la priorità ai cosiddetti ¿princìpi metafisici generali¿ senza, tuttavia, che il rapporto di precedenza tra l'ontologia e la metafisica (strettamente intese in senso varziano) debba venire meno.
