Dalla Scuola di Chicago ai Neighborhood Effect: un'analisi di sociologia urbana sui quartieri e le loro problematiche

The thesis speaks of some important studies of urban sociology, from the first empirical research of the school of chicago to new sociological theories that are taking place in america, specifically that of the Neighborhood effect. "Neighborhood effect" is a concept of economic and social science in which the neighborhoods are supposed to have a direct or indirect effect on the individual behaviors of the individuals who live there.The thesis focuses in particular on what concerns the problems of some neighborhoods and the consequences that they imply on the individuals who live there.The thesis wants to bring out the connection that exists between the context in which an individual grows and lives and his characteristics as an individual and a citizen.Often in fact the conduct and habits of a district can be totally different from those of another, even if they being near in the same city.The writing of the thesis was preceded and accompanied, as well as by a strong interest in the subject, by various ethnographic documents concerning American and Italian urban contexts.The most focused and in-depth study of a city, studied as a set of different neighborhoods, could be very useful for the purposes of policy and city administration.

La tesi ripercorre alcuni importanti studi di sociologia urbana, dalle prime ricerche empiriche della scuola di chicago fino a nuove teorie sociologiche che stanno prendendo piede in america, nello specifico quella dei Neighborhood Effect. "Neighborhood effect" è un concetto di scienza economica e sociale in cui si presuppone che i quartieri abbiano un effetto, diretto o indiretto, sui comportamenti individuali degli individui che li abitano. La tesi si sofferma quindi in particolare su ciò che riguarda le problematiche di alcuni quartieri e le conseguenze che ne comportano sugli individui che li abitano. I temi che vengono toccati sono le diseguaglianze che vi sono tra quartieri differenti in una grossa città che a loro volta creano differenze e diseguaglianze tra gli abitanti di essa. La tesi vuole fare emergere la connessione che vi è tra il contesto in cui un individuo cresce e vive e le sue caratteristiche di individuo e cittadino. Spesso infatti la condotta e le abitudini di un quartiere possono essere totalmente differenti da quelle di un altro nonostante si trovino vicini nella stessa città. La stesura della tesi è stata preceduta ed accompagnata, oltre che da un forte interesse personale per l'argomento, da diverse documentazioni etnografiche che riguardavano contensti urbani americani ed italiani. Lo studio più mirato e approfondito di una città, studiata come un insieme di quartieri differenti, potrebbe essere molto utile ai fini di policy e di amministrazione cittadina.
