La costruzione sociale della tossicodipendenza: tra forme di discriminazione e controllo sociale

This thesis stems from an experience conducted as a trainee in a community for drug addicts. Before starting this adventure, which unexpectedly turned out to be one of the most important formative experiences of my life, I was totally overwhelmed by the prejudices, fears and insecurities that society had built up on me. Part of me, however, wanted to dig deeper to find out if everything I was told was real. In fact, having overcome the paralyzing emotions, a totally new world opened up before me. I met extremely sensitive people who struggled every day to make their dreams come true. I interacted with educators who were able to anticipate what users needed. I have heard unique stories that have changed my approach and my perspective of the world. After that experience, I felt that I had to give back what had been given to me. Hence the idea of a thesis, a text that could investigate the figure of the drug addict between the past and the future, between discrimination and social control. The first chapter summarizes the historical events that led human beings to the discovery of drugs as creative substances of the frontier of medicine, religion and philosophy. At the same time, the social phenomena that have led man to progressively replace natural products with synthetic ones will be explained. The second chapter deals with the theme of the balance between legality and illegality by analyzing data from around the world and a different approach to the sphere of drug addiction. In the third and final chapter, the functioning of communities for drug addicts will be investigated, as well as my experience and the interviews conducted on the basis of what has been analyzed previously.

Questa tesi nasce da un esperienza condotta come tirocinante all’interno di una comunità per tossicodipendenti. Prima di iniziare tale avventura, che inaspettatamente si sarebbe rivelata una delle esperienze formative più importanti della mia vita, ero totalmente sommersa dai pregiudizi, dalle paure e dalle insicurezze che la società aveva costruito sulla mia persona. Una parte di me, però, voleva andare a fondo per scoprire se tutto ciò che mi era stato raccontato era reale. Superate, infatti, le emozioni paralizzanti, davanti a me si è aperto un mondo totalmente nuovo. Ho conosciuto persone estremamente sensibili che ogni giorno lottavano per realizzare i propri sogni. Ho interagito con educatori che riuscivano ad anticipare ciò di cui gli utenti avevano bisogno. Ho ascoltato storie uniche che hanno cambiato il mio approccio e la mia prospettiva del mondo. Uscita da quell’esperienza, sentivo che dovevo restituire ciò che mi era stato donato. Di qui l’idea di una tesi, di un testo che potesse indagare la figura del tossicodipendente tra passato e futuro, fra discriminazione e controllo sociale. Il primo capitolo riassume gli avvenimenti storici che hanno portato l’essere umano alla scoperta delle droghe come sostanze creatrici della frontiera della medicina, della religione e della filosofia. Allo stesso tempo verranno spiegati i fenomeni sociali che hanno portato l’uomo a sostituire progressivamente i prodotti naturali con quelli sintetici. Il secondo capitolo affronta il tema dell’equilibrio fra la legalità e illegalità analizzando i dati nel mondo e un diverso approccio alla sfera della tossicodipendenza. Nel terzo e ultimo capitolo verrà indagato il funzionamento delle comunità per persone tossicodipendenti, la mia esperienza e le interviste condotte sulla base di quanto analizzato precedentemente.
