Studio e restauro di una marionetta napoletana dalla collezione Grilli (Torino)

This thesis presents the study and restoration of a Neapolitan puppet representing a “Guappo” or a “Brigante”, belonging to the Grilli collection (Turin). The first part of the dissertation focuses on the art-historical research that has been conducted, which showed an in-depth study of the Italian artistic heritage of puppets and marionettes as well as their different settings related to their movements and the history of the puppet theatre. In addition, the results of the various diagnostic examinations are reported, which have allowed for a better understanding of the materials, execution technique and state of preservation of all the different components of the artefact. In the section of the thesis dealing with the restoration work, the various operational steps carried out on all the textile artifacts, starting from cleaning tests to needle consolidation, are described in the great detail. The various procedures and materials to be used for consolidation have been selected according to the different needs, to be appropriate for the restoration and preservation of the textiles. Each phase of intervention has been documented with photographs as evidence of the procedures carried out on the textile materials. The last part of the thesis is about packaging and the correct maintenance for a proper conservation.

Il lavoro di tesi presenta lo studio e il restauro di una marionetta napoletana raffigurante un Guappo o un Brigante, appartenente alla collezione Grilli (Torino). Nella prima parte della tesi sono riportate ricerche storico-artistiche che hanno permesso di approfondire la conoscenza del patrimonio culturale legato a pupi e marionette. Particolare attenzione è stata dedicata alle differenti impostazioni relative ai movimenti e alla storia del teatro di figura. Inoltre, sono riportati i risultati delle diverse indagini diagnostiche che hanno consentito di conoscere al meglio i materiali, la tecnica esecutiva e lo stato di conservazione di tutte le varie componenti del manufatto. Nella parte dedicata all’intervento di restauro, sono state presentate con dovizia di particolari le diverse fasi operative eseguite su tutti i manufatti tessili, a partire dalle prove di pulitura fino al consolidamento ad ago. Le varie procedure e i materiali da utilizzare per il consolidamento sono stati selezionati in funzione delle diverse necessità in modo che fossero adeguati al ripristino e alla conservazione dei tessili. Ogni fase dell’intervento è stata documentata con fotografie a testimonianza dei procedimenti effettuati sui materiali tessili. L’ultima sezione della tesi è dedicata all’imballaggio e alla manutenzione per la corretta conservazione.
