Cola di Rienzo. Il suo mondo, la sua vita

In the common imagination of almost everyone to whom I have referred my thesis topic, Cola di Rienzo has always been somehow associated with the XIX century and with the Risorgimento experience in general: a curious and well-established time-lag of half a millennium then. This is due to the fact that it was precisely in that period that Cola's fortunes flourished again, with a consequent proliferation in the most diverse fields, from music to literature, from theatre to town planning. Although it can be very stimulating to study how and in what forms Cola's memory has been handed down through the centuries, I do not intend to focus on this aspect, which I will bring to light only in the final phase, as a seal on the research conducted. Instead, the epicentre of my work will be the social, political and cultural basin in which Cola was born and grew up, namely the Rome at the turn of the XIII and XIV centuries. I will attempt, by joining the various pieces of a polychrome mosaic, to outline the elements that shaped Cola's mind and person, making his life and actions not only a cause for admiration or attention, but also becoming a true epic parable and entering the legend, the myth that, in some ways, and even with chronological confusions, still resists today. My first analysis will focus on the various subdivisions of the city, its main institutions and the Capitoline society, highlighting the complex systems of power that existed in Rome at the time, taking into account the major local noble families and their relations with the people. I will then move on to describe the situation in Rome during the first years of the "Avignon captivity", a powerful trigger for Cola's experience, the most salient and relevant features of whose life I will outline below, also through the testimony of the Anonymous Roman. Finally, I will try to explain why his action was so significant not only for his contemporaries, but also for posterity. Rivers of ink have been written on this extraordinary figure, and I certainly do not aim to add anything new or revolutionary. What I do hope, however, is to offer as clear a picture as possible of the context in which Cola lived, who is often mistakenly presented as an exceptional man (which he certainly was), disconnected, however, from his world, from the reality that had been so central to the formation of his person and his ideas, full of energy and passion, but entirely within the society of the time.

Nell’immaginario comune di quasi ognuna delle persone a cui ho riferito il mio argomento di tesi, Cola di Rienzo è sempre stato in qualche modo associato al XIX secolo e all’esperienza risorgimentale in genere: un curioso e consolidato sfasamento temporale di mezzo millennio dunque. Ciò si deve al fatto che fu proprio in quel periodo che si ebbe una rifioritura della fortuna di Cola, con una sua conseguente proliferazione nei più svariati campi, dalla musica alla letteratura, dal teatro all’urbanistica. Sebbene possa essere molto stimolante studiare in che modo e in quali forme la memoria di Cola sia stata tramandata nel corso dei secoli, non è mia intenzione focalizzarmi su quest’aspetto, che riporterò alla luce solo nella fase conclusiva, come suggello della ricerca condotta. Epicentro del mio lavoro sarà invece il bacino sociale, politico e culturale in cui Cola è nato e cresciuto, ovvero la Roma a cavallo tra XIII e XIV secolo. Tenterò, unendo i vari tasselli di un policromo mosaico, di delineare gli elementi che hanno forgiato la mente e la persona di Cola, facendo sì che la sua vita e le sue azioni non fossero soltanto motivo di ammirazione o attenzione ma che divenissero una vera e propria parabola epica e che entrassero nella leggenda, nel mito che, per certi versi, e seppur con confusioni cronologiche, resiste ancora ai giorni nostri. Mi soffermerò in prima analisi sulle varie suddivisioni della città, sulle sue istituzioni principali e sulla società capitolina, mettendo in evidenza i complessi sistemi di potere che intercorrevano nella Roma del tempo, tenendo conto delle maggiori casate nobiliari locali e dei loro rapporti con il popolo. Mi sposterò poi a descrivere la situazione di Roma durante i primi anni della “cattività avignonese”, potente elemento scatenante dell’esperienza di Cola, della cui vita accennerò i tratti più salienti e pertinenti di seguito, anche attraverso la testimonianza dell’Anonimo romano. Da ultimo, proverò a spiegare il motivo per cui la sua azione sia stata così significativa non solo per i contemporanei, ma anche per i posteri. Fiumi d’inchiostro sono stati scritti su questa figura straordinaria, e non mi prefiggo certo di aggiungere alcunché di inedito o rivoluzionario. Quello che però auspico è offrire un quadro quanto più nitido del contesto in cui visse Cola, che spesso, in modo erroneo, viene presentato come un uomo eccezionale (che senz’altro era) slegato però dal suo mondo, da quella realtà che era invece stata così centrale per la formazione della sua persona e delle sue idee, sì ricolme di energia e passione, ma del tutto collocabili nella società del tempo.
