Da Piazza d’Italia a Il filo dell’orizzonte: l’influenza del Postmodernismo nell’opera di Antonio Tabucchi

The aim of my paper is to analyze the very first ten years of Antonio Tabucchi’s literary production, trying to understand if and how Postmodernism influenced his work. I took into account novels and short stories from Piazza d’Italia (1975) up until Il filo dell’orizzonte (1986). Instead of individuating every postmodernist feature in each work, I chose to consider some macro themes for each chapter, therefore interpreting the texts with a specific reading key. For example, in the second chapter I took into account the postmodernist category of metaphysical detective fiction, introduced by Patricia Merivale and Susan Elizabeth Sweeney, and I used it as a reading key for two novels, just apparently belonging to the detective fiction’s genre: Notturno indiano and Il filo dell’orizzonte. As a matter of fact, the two scholars claim that, even though the metaphysical detective fiction maintains several typical features of the genre, it has a completely new and different approach which doesn’t aim for the mystery resolution, just apparently the main point of the whole text, when instead all the attention leads toward existential or ontological concern. Therefore, I went through these two novels and I tried to understand if the category proposed by the two scholars could be applied to the text. I applied the same criteria to all the other chapters, starting from an introduction on a theoretical level and trying to understand if it could be applied to the text. Regarding the bibliography, in addition to the primary sources, I used other Tabucchi’s works, although they were published later than the period I examined, and some interviews. Besides, I took into account Italian and foreign critical essays, both for the analysis of the main texts, and for the theoretical background concerning Postmodernism.

L’obiettivo del mio elaborato è analizzare i primi dieci anni della produzione letteraria di Antonio Tabucchi, cercando di capire se e come la corrente postmodernista abbia influenzato il suo lavoro. Ho preso dunque in considerazione romanzi e raccolte di racconti a partire da Piazza d’Italia (1975) fino a Il filo dell’orizzonte (1986). Anziché rintracciare tutti i tratti postmodernisti all’interno di ogni singola opera, ho scelto un approccio metodologico differente: per ciascun capitolo, infatti, mi sono focalizzata su un macro tema che è stata la chiave di lettura di alcuni testi scelti. Per esempio, nel secondo capitolo ho preso in considerazione la categoria postmodernista di metaphysical detective fiction, introdotta dalle studiose Patricia Merivale e Susan Elizabeth Sweeney, e l’ho adoperata come chiave di lettura per l’analisi di due romanzi solo apparentemente d’indagine: Notturno indiano e Il filo dell’orizzonte. Le due studiose sostengono infatti che il romanzo d’indagine in epoca postmoderna, pur mantenendo molte delle caratteristiche tipiche del genere poliziesco, si distingua per un approccio che non è più teso alla risoluzione del mistero, ormai solo apparentemente al centro della narrazione, ma che invece l’attenzione del detective si concentri su dubbi di carattere esistenziale o ontologico. Ripercorrendo dunque le trame, ho cercato di capire se la categoria proposta dalle studiose possa essere applicata anche a questi due romanzi di Antonio Tabucchi. Ho applicato lo stesso criterio di analisi agli altri capitoli, partendo dunque da un’introduzione di stampo teorico e cercando di capire se i principi teorizzati possano essere effettivamente applicati ai testi. Per quanto riguarda la bibliografia, oltre alle fonti primarie, mi sono avvalsa di alcuni testi dello stesso Tabucchi, benché successivi al decennio preso in esame, e di alcune interviste. Ho inoltre preso in considerazione saggi critici italiani e stranieri, sia per quanto riguarda il lavoro diretto sui testi, sia per quanto riguarda il background teorico sul Postmodernismo.
