Garantire modelli sostenibili di produzione e consumo nel sistema alimentare dell’Unione Europea

Sustainability in the food system has been at the centre of political debate in the last years, especially in the European institutions. Building a resilient and resource-conscious food system in the EU is at the heart of the Green Deal, the plan developed by the Von der Leyen Commission to achieve climate goals, specifically the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Because of its deep interconnection with the environment, the agri-food system has a profound impact on climate and ecosystem balances. This study first analyses the consequences of a food system that is not aligned with the needs of the environment, then assesses the extent to which the European Union's agricultural and environmental policies have contributed to the achievement of the SDGs, and it finally presents the Green Deal and, more specifically, the farm to fork strategy, in order to understand the potential of these policies in ensuring a sustainable food system that is environmentally and people-oriented.

La sostenibilità in ambito alimentare è un tema molto dibattuto negli ultimi anni, soprattutto all’interno delle istituzioni europee. La costruzione di un sistema alimentare resiliente e attento alle risorse del pianeta è al cuore del Green Deal, il piano elaborato dalla Commissione Von der Leyen per raggiungere gli obiettivi climatici, in particolare gli obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile delle Nazioni Unite (SDG). A causa della sua profonda interconnessione con l’ambiente, infatti, il sistema agroalimentare ha un elevato impatto sugli equilibri climatici ed ecosistemici. Nel corso di questo studio verranno analizzate dapprima le conseguenze di un sistema alimentare non allineato con i bisogni dell’ambiente, successivamente si valuterà in quale misura le politiche agricole e ambientali dell’Unione Europea hanno contribuito alla realizzazione degli SDG, e infine verranno presentati il Green Deal e, più nello specifico, la strategia “dal produttore al consumatore”, per comprendere il potenziale di queste politiche nel garantire un sistema alimentare sostenibile, attento alle necessità dell’ambiente e delle persone.
