Abstract

Human rights of African Americans should be granted equal weights as those of white Americans. The issue of discrimination and racial inequality against African Americans finds its genesis in the slave’s institution which has characterized southern states of the United States from the 17th till 19th centuries. After 156 years of the abolition of slavery, Blacks are still being targeted by various regulations; and what is the reason behind this treatment? Their skin color is linked to the idea of inferiority. When the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted in 1948, the aim was to emphasize that everyone, including Blacks, are entitled to human rights. Everyone is equal despite his/her skin color; what should be learnt is to live in unity despite diversities. This paper will illustrate the development of the notion of human rights alongside its various features, followed by how racial inequality and discrimination are causing infringement of human rights of African Americans in the United States of America.
