"No Time for Songs": Religione e Terrorismo nella letteratura "Post-9/11"

This thesis will attempt to analyse the themes of Religion and Terrorism in the so-called “Post-9/11 fiction” using Salman Rushdie’s “Shalimar the Clown” and Nadeem Aslam’s “The Wasted Vigil” as a starting point; the novels will be correlated to their respective critical academic material. The thesis will start with briefly introducing both novels, their authors and their key themes for then investigating the issue of the Islamic religion and its related terrorism and fundamentalisms; it will question causes and behaviours, brought to light by the two writers through their characters. This work will also tackle the subjects of the role of women and the role of culture, allowing a reflection on the modern world, on globalisation and on the current role of religion.

La tesi cerca di analizzare le tematiche legate a Religione e Terrorismo all'interno della letteratura appartenente alla corrente denominata "Post-9/11 Fiction", utilizzando i romanzi "Shalimar the Clown" di Salman Rushdie e "The Wasted Vigil" di Nadeem Aslam corredati del rispettivo materiale critico. Il lavoro parte con una prima introduzione ad entrambi i romanzi, ai loro autori e ai temi trattati per poi approfondire nei due capitoli successivi il tema della religione islamica all'interno delle due opere e il tema del terrorismo e del fondamentalismo ad essa correlati, analizzando cause e comportamenti portati alla luce dai due scrittori attraverso i loro personaggi. Saranno trattati i temi legati al ruolo della donna e al ruolo della cultura all'interno dei due libri, permettendo una riflessione sul mondo moderno, sulla globalizzazione e sull'odierno ruolo della religione.
