Body Integrity Identity Disorder "Ciò che sappiamo su un disturbo ancora misterioso"

Let's imagine the life of a person who, while not suffering from psychotic delusions, strongly wishes to free himself at all costs from a limb which, however, is perfectly healthy and functioning; this is, in short, the symptomatology of Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID). Imagine how much suffering this person feels even just because of his desire to mutilate himself which is socially unacceptable, and how much is the fear of opening up to others about what he feels with the risk of being considered crazy and despised by everyone. Due to this fear of judgment about their condition, BIID subjects kept silent about their condition and the disorder remained hidden from the eyes of scholars for a long time. The aim of this work is to provide the reader with as complete a picture as possible on current knowledge of BIID, and to make the phenomenon less and less unknown. Following an introduction in which the path that the study of BIID has taken over the years will be observed, a discussion of the phenomenon from the point of view of neuroscience and psychology will follow; finally, a discussion of the ethical issues raised by the disorder and the proposed therapies to treat it will finish the paper.

Immaginiamo la vita di una persona che, pur non soffrendo di deliri psicotici, desidera fortemente liberarsi a tutti i costi di un arto che, tuttavia, risulta perfettamente sano e funzionante; questa è, in breve, la sintomatologia del Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID). Immaginiamo quanta sofferenza questa persona provi anche solo per via del suo desiderio di mutilarsi che risulta socialmente inaccettabile, e quanto sia il timore di aprirsi agli altri su quello che prova con il rischio di essere considerati pazzi e disprezzati da tutti. Per via di questo timore del giudizio circa la propria condizione, i soggetti BIID hanno taciuto la propria condizione ed il disturbo è rimasto nascosto agli occhi degli studiosi a lungo. Scopo di questo lavoro è fornire al lettore un quadro il più completo possibile sulle conoscenze attuali del BIID, e rendere il fenomeno sempre meno sconosciuto. A seguito di un’introduzione in cui verrà osservato il percorso che lo studio del BIID ha fatto nel corso degli anni, seguirà una trattazione del fenomeno dal punto di vista delle neuroscienze e della psicologia; infine una trattazione sulle questioni etiche aperte dal disturbo e sulle terapie proposte per curarlo terminerà l’elaborato.
