I folli come persone. Dal manicomio di Collegno al recovery approach.

My final dissertation explores the theme of the different conceptions and visions of mental illness and how they have changed profoundly over the centuries: from the Middle Ages, when it was simply defined as madness and those affected were considered bearers of "dark knowledge" to the centuries to come when the insane were segregated and expelled from society. From the birth of asylums (places of suffering, exclusion and loss of identity) to their progressive dismission. The case that I will deal specifically is that of the asylum of Collegno and the vicissitudes that have affected it since its foundation: from the repeated violations of human rights within it, to the "Giorgio Coda case" up to Dr. Basaglia (with the law that brings his name) and at the closing of the asylums. Finally, the recovery approach as an innovative method for taking charge and treating people with mental disorders.

La mia dissertazione finale approfondisce il tema delle differenti concezioni e visioni della malattia mentale e di come esse siano cambiate profondamente nel corso dei secoli: dal medioevo, quando essa veniva definita semplicemente follia e chi ne era affetto era considerato portatore di un “oscuro sapere” ai secoli a venire quando i folli vennero segregati ed estromessi dalla società. Dalla nascita dei manicomi (luoghi di sofferenza, esclusione e perdita di identità) alla loro progressiva dismissione. Il caso che tratterò nello specifico è quello del manicomio di Collegno e delle vicissitudini che lo hanno riguardato fin dalla sua fondazione: dalle ripetute violazioni dei diritti umani al suo interno, al “caso Giorgio Coda” fino al dottor Basaglia (con la legge che porta il suo nome) ed alla chiusura dei manicomi. Infine il recovery approach come metodo innovativo per la presa in carico e la cura delle persone con disturbo mentale.
