What makes individuals make collective decisions? While it is widely believed that individual motivation is considered outside the picture and encourages a variety of solutions, the exact role of motivation and reward in collective intelligence is unknown. Here, l investigated group intelligence through interactive group assessment activities in which participants are rewarded for individual or group performance. In addition to examining the structure of personal motivation in front of the group, l also investigated whether participants could see social information about other people's reactions. Knowing the reactions of others reduces the intelligence of the audience, and more importantly, the fact that this effect depends on how people are rewarded. When participants were rewarded for the accuracy of their individual responses, the group average participant segmented the group by increasing social cohesion and reducing diversity. Rewarding group performance increases the diversity of group opinions and knowledge. We conclude that we need to reconsider the spontaneous relationship between personal inspiration and personal opinion.

Abstract
We conclude that we need to reconsider the spontaneous relationship between personal inspiration and personal opinion.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
