An Analysis of Dystopian Sci-Fi, Language and Nightmare in The Handmaid's Tale

This Dissertation provides an analysis of Dystopian Sci-Fi inThe Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. The study aims to investigate the use of language, the emotional baggage and the nightmarish atmosphere developed in the novel. This purpose is achieved through a presentation of The Handmaid’s Tale with specific attention to its narratological, linguistic and emotional aspects. In this context, this dissertation gives an insight of the genre of the novel, to fully understand the style and rhythm of narration, furtherly justifying the topics of the novel; an analysis of the use of language is given by studying techniques employed (such as layering and retellings), dissecting the text and actively working on it; moreover, the dissertation offers an insight into the nightmarish and distressful condition under the Gileadean regime.

Questa Dissertazione presenta un’analisi di The Handmaid’s Tale di Margaret Atwood. Lo studio ha lo scopo di approfondire l’uso della lingua, il bagaglio emotivo e l’atmosfera di incubo sviluppati all’interno del romanzo. Questo obbiettivo viene raggiunto attraverso una riscoperta di The Handmaid’s Tale con particolare attenzione per gli aspetti narratologici, linguistici ed emotivi. In questo contesto, la dissertazione offre un approfondimento sul genere del romanzo, per comprendere pienamente lo stile e il ritmo della narrazione, spiegando ulteriormente gli argomenti del romanzo; viene inoltre offerta un’analisi dell’uso del linguaggio, studiando le tecniche impiegate (come il layering e i retellings), dissezionando il testo e lavorandoci sopra attivamente; infine, la dissertazione esplora la condizione di incubo e angoscia sotto il regime di Gilead.
