In the last couple of decades, the business environment has changed dramatically, the increasing globalization of our world has favored the development of more complex business entities that lean towards a more internationally oriented way of doing business. Although the scene is dominated by Multinational Corporations (MNCs), it is important to remember that the vast majority of Countries’ economies still rely on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs); these companies are now trying to extend their reach abroad, as national markets may no longer offer enough resources to survive, or just because they’re seeking expansion. In this paperwork we will analyze the process of internationalization of SMEs in the food & beverage industry by looking at which are the most effective strategies to adopt in order to be successful in a foreign market, as well as which models are adopted in the literature to describe and analyze international ventures. We will also take a look at some case studies in order to better understand how different factors affect the internationalization process and how these companies can overcome barriers and get the best out of their limited resources.
