Wilde e Pater: le due anime dell'estetismo inglese

The main theme of this short paper is Aestheticism with its two most influential figures: Oscar Wilde and Walter Pater. In the first chapter, after a brief presentation of the current of Aestheticism, the two authors are presented with autobiographical notes. Writing about Pater as an author, the focus falls on what aesthetics and art represent for him, being these ideals the foundation of Aestheticism itself. The second chapter deals with the relationship between the two writers: from the first meeting at Oxford College to the mutual criticism expressed in different contexts. There are some points in common between the two authors (deriving from the influence that Pater generally exerts on Wilde) and some the points of divergence (due to Pater's fear of daring), thus it is emphasized how these two figures can be defined as similar but at the same time opposite. The final chapter focuses on Oscar Wilde's masterpiece The Picture of Dorian Gray, a book that best represents the current of Aestheticism and the earthly damnation which follows the achievement (and maintenance) of beauty.

Questo breve elaborato ha come tema principale l'Estetismo con le sue due figure più influenti: Oscar Wilde and Walter Pater. Nel primo capitolo, dopo una breve illustrazione della corrente dell'Estetismo, vengono presentati i due autori con cenni autobiografici. Scrivendo di Pater come autore, il focus ricade su ciò che l'estetica e l'arte rappresentano per lui, essendo queste le fondamenta dell'Estetismo stesso. Nel secondo capitolo viene trattata la relazione fra i due scrittori: dal primo incontro al College di Oxford fino alle reciproche critiche espresse in diversi contesti. Vengono messi in luce i punti in comune fra i due autori (derivanti dall'influenza che in generale Pater esercita su Wilde) e alcuni punti di divergenza (dovuti alla paura di osare di Pater), mettendo così in rilievo come queste due figure possano essere definite simili ma allo stesso tempo opposte. L'ultimo capitolo è incentrato sul capolavoro di Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, libro che meglio rappresenta la corrente dell'Estetismo e che racconta come il raggiungimento ed il mantenimento della bellezza possano portare alla dannazione eterna. L'opera è frutto della fantasia dell'autore ma trova le radici nella realtà, o meglio, nella realtà percepita da Wilde. Una sezione del capitolo è dedicata alla presenza di Walter Pater nel libro, riconducibile alla figura di Lord Henry, le cui idee molto spesso ricordano quelle di Pater stesso. In un ultimo breve segmento, viene riportato come Pater abbia accolto e recensito l'opera di Oscar Wilde, non limitandosi nelle critiche.
