Beckett traduce Beckett: da "L'Expulsé" a "The Expelled"

This thesis focuses on Samuel Beckett's "The Expelled", a story first written in French and then translated into English by the author, with the aim of comparing its two versions and analyzing the result of the translation and the possible differences between the texts. My dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides an overview of Beckett's short prose from 1929 to 1988 and ends with the plot of "The Expelled". The second chapter explains Beckett's personal and literary reasons for writing his works exclusively in French for a decade, then alternating French and English since 1955. In the third chapter, after a brief presentation of Beckett's self-translation, the comparison between the French version, "L'Expulsé", and the English one, "The Expelled", highlights their different stylistic and formal features and shows how Beckett's self-translation is mainly a rewriting of the first text, consistent with his poetics of reduction.

La presente tesi prende in esame una prosa breve di Samuel Beckett, "Lo sfrattato", scritta dapprima in francese e poi da lui tradotta in inglese, con l'obiettivo di raffrontare le due versioni analizzandone la resa traduttiva e le eventuali differenze. Il lavoro è diviso in tre capitoli. Il primo capitolo offre innanzitutto una panoramica delle prose brevi beckettiane dal 1929 al 1988 e si conclude con la trama della novella "Lo sfrattato". Nel secondo capitolo vengono poi spiegate le motivazioni personali e letterarie che hanno portato Beckett a scegliere di scrivere le sue opere in francese a partire dal 1946, in modo esclusivo per un decennio e poi alternandolo con l'inglese dal 1955. Nel terzo capitolo, infine, dopo una breve presentazione dell'autotraduzione beckettiana, viene confrontata la versione francese della novella, "L'Expulsé", con la versione inglese, "The Expelled", evidenziando le differenti caratteristiche stilistiche e formali dei due testi e mettendo in luce come l'autotraduzione di Beckett sia principalmente una riscrittura del primo testo, coerente alla propria poetica di riduzione.
