CLI-FI in the EFL Classroom: A Way to Engage and Involve Sudents

The present dissertation investigates the practice of teaching English literature to EFL students, focusing in particular on Climate Fiction, also called Cli-Fi, in order to make literature relevant and motivating for young people and introduce the important issue of Climate Change to them. Before analyzing Cli-Fi, the thesis offers an overview of the didactics of literature. It is focused on different topics necessary to understand the importance of teaching literature during an EFL class, such as giving a definition of literature, analyzing methods of teaching literature, and the strategies employed to help learners read literary texts. Another aim of the dissertation is that of describing the main goals and features of linguistic and literary education in Italy, underlining the situation of crisis regarding the practice of teaching literature that the Italian School and teachers are experiencing. After analyzing the didactic function of literature, the thesis sums up the issue of anthropogenic Climate Change, as one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century and focuses on Cli-Fi. This genre explores the consequences of anthropogenic Climate Change and the relationship between man and nature. The aim of this part is that of describing Cli-Fi, highlighting its themes, its main literary works, the close relationship with other genres, such as Sci-Fi, and the positive effects of teaching Cli-Fi in an EFL class. The last chapter of the thesis includes a teaching module on Cli-Fi addressed to an Italian high school class, which takes into account the different approaches to teaching literature analyzed before. It will be centered on the analysis of a Cli-Fi novel: Barbara Kingsolver's Flight Behaviour, dealing with anthropogenic Climate Change and the relationship between humans and the environment. With this dissertation it is possible to show that Cli-Fi can be a powerful didactic tool to develop linguistic skills and raise awareness about an issue that will affect more and more the lives of present and future generations.

Questa tesi ha l'obiettivo di sviluppare una ricerca sull'insegnamento della letteratura inglese durante le lezioni di lingua straniera, concentrandosi in particolare su un genere letterario chiamato Climate Fiction o Cli-Fi, in modo da spiegare come rendere motivante e comprensibile per gli studenti il problema del Cambiamento Climatico attraverso la letteratura. Questo lavoro di ricerca, prima di analizzare la Climate Fiction, fornisce una panoramica sull'insegnamento della letteratura. Si concentra su diversi argomenti per mostrare l'importanza dell'insegnamento di questa materia durante le lezioni di lingua inglese: ad esempio, come spiegare la funzione della letteratura, i diversi metodi ed approcci che vengono impiegati per insegnarla e le strategie utili per aiutare gli studenti a comprendere i testi letterari. Un altro scopo di questa tesi è descrivere le principali caratteristiche dell'educazione linguistica e letteraria in Italia, analizzandone finalità ed approcci, evidenziando la situazione di crisi, per quanto riguarda l'insegnamento della letteratura, che stanno affrontando la scuola italiana ed i suoi insegnanti. L'elaborato riassume poi il concetto di Cambiamento Climatico causato in particolar modo dall'uomo come una delle principali sfide di questo secolo e che si collega con l'insegnamento della letteratura attraverso la Cli-Fi. Questo tipo di genere letterario si focalizza sulle conseguenze del Cambiamento Climatico e sulla relazione tra uomo e natura. Se ne descrivono le tematiche, le principali opere e il rapporto esistente con altri generi come quello della fantascienza. Infine la tesi presenta un modulo didattico sulla Cli-Fi rivolto a studenti di liceo nelle ore di lingua straniera, che tiene in considerazione i diversi approcci per insegnare letteratura esaminati precedentemente. In particolare, il modulo si concentra sull'analisi di un famoso romanzo appartenente a questo genere: Flight Behaviour di Barbara Kingsolver, che tratta del Cambiamento Climatico causato dall'uomo e della relaziona tra gli esseri umani e l'ambiente. Con questa ricerca si spera di mostrare come la Cli-Fi possa essere un ottimo strumento didattico per sviluppare determinate abilità linguistiche e per creare consapevolezza negli studenti del problema del Cambiamento Climatico, che influenzerà sempre più la vita delle future generazioni.
