The relationship between the mother and her baby begins to take shape as early as pregnancy and evolves in the months following birth, developing into a relationship of attachment. It is a co-constructed relationship, in which both the child and the parent play an active role and in which they both influence each other. The birth of a child brings with it fantasies and desires, but also fears. When a child with disabilities is born, the family undergoes a necessary reorganization to cope with the new situation. In the case of a visual impairment, the absence of sight, an important sense for the development of reciprocity and attachment, compels the child to use other senses, such as touch and hearing. And it is through these alternative channels that the child communicates his needs. The mother's attention in interpreting these signals is essential for developing a secure attachment.

La relazione tra la madre e il bambino inizia a prendere forma già a partire dalla gravidanza e si evolve nei mesi successivi alla nascita, sviluppandosi in una relazione di attaccamento. È un rapporto co-costruito, in cui hanno un ruolo attivo sia il bambino sia il genitore e in cui entrambi si influenzano reciprocamente. La nascita di un bambino porta con sé fantasie e desideri, ma anche paure. Quando a nascere è un bambino con disabilità, la famiglia va incontro ad una riorganizzazione necessaria per far fronte alla nuova situazione. Nel caso di una disabilità visiva, l’assenza della vista, senso importante per lo sviluppo della reciprocità e dell'attaccamento, costringe il bambino ad utilizzare gli altri sensi, quali il tatto e l’udito. Ed è attraverso questi canali alternativi che il bambino comunica i suoi bisogni. L’attenzione della madre nell’interpretare questi segnali è fondamentale affinché si sviluppi un attaccamento sicuro.
