Since the birth of the economy in its broadest sense, human cunning has always looked for new methodologies to deceive control and supervision systems that were being strengthened in tandem in order to fight against frauds. The fields of financial reporting and earnings management saw, and continue to do so, several fraudulent cases, that the research treats and deepens from a critical and historical perspective. The study is focusing on the most common types of financial scams, for which analysts implement numerous methods to understand which companies make use of manipulation. The thesis analyses the effects of the fraudulents through applying the case study methodology by deeply examining the scandal of Bernard Madoff, one of the most serious and impactful in history, wanting to demonstrate the extent and negative externalities it had on millions of people. The research deeply studies the literature review based on numerous bibliographic, journalistic and cinematographic sources collected and reworked during the writing of the same.
