Valutazione e trattamento delle lesioni dello zoccolo del cavallo

The thesis focus on a deep analysis of equine locomotor apparatus, particularly on the hoof, underlying every lesion that can affect it and researching for each one of them the correct shoeing and treatment, respecting the anatomy, the physiology and the biomechanics of this organ. This work also talks about the correct tecniques of balancing of horses hoof, to help mantain a healthy hoof and prevent the outbreak of pathologies that can affect it. It also makes a deep analysis of horse gait and help correct, if they are present, gait defects or limb conformation defects by balancing the hoof. Among the main pathologies that have been analyzed in this thesis there is the problem of hoof cracks, white line disease, keratoma, thrush and all the deformations of the hoof which are caused by laminitis or that are due to subsolar abscess. All of them have been treated reffering to scientif literature talking about them. For each one of them the most adequate therapy was found in order to support healing and also provide relief from pain to the horse, also thanks to shoes which were specific for that problem. It was fundamental during all this period of time the collaboration between the vet and the farrier, who don't have to act as opposed one to each other, but they have to collaborate together to ensure the horse hoof wellness. Throughout the writing of this thesis, and also thanks to the intership that I have made, I could study the basis of horse hoof balancing; I could also study horse biomechanics, referring particularly to the various gaits and the defects that can involve them. I have also examined in depth the knowledge of horse hoof and all the anatomical structures that are contained inside it, analysing and applying, for each case, the most adequate shoeing. All this has allowed me to have a greater awareness of horse hoof and how it has to be managed in order to guarantee its health and prevent the outbreak of diseases. The intership and writing of this thesis has helped me a lot in approaching horse world and they have allowed me to understand the different opportunities that this sector can offer to me.

La tesi si concentra su un'analisi approfondita dell'apparato locomotore del cavallo, in particolar modo sullo zoccolo, andando ad evidenziare tutte le lesioni che possono colpirlo ed andando a ricercare per ciascuna di esse la ferratura ed il trattamento più corretti, rispettando l'anatomia, la fisiologia e la biomeccanica di quest'organo. Questo lavoro si concentra anche sulle corrette tecniche di pareggio per mantenere uno zoccolo sano e prevenire l'insorgenza di patologie dello stesso, facendo anche un'analisi profonda dell'andatura del cavallo ed andando a correggere, se presenti, eventuali difetti della stessa o difetti di appiombo tramite il pareggio. Tra le patologie principali analizzate in questa tesi di laurea è stato trattato il problema delle setole, dell'onicomicosi, del cheratoma ungeale, della pododermatite essudativa ed iperplastica del fettone e tutte le deformazioni della scatola cornea conseguenti a laminiti o che possono insorgere a seguito di ascessi subsoleari, facendo riferimento alla lettura scientifica presente in merito ad esse. Per ciascuna di esse si è cercato di trovare la terapia più adeguata in modo da favorire la guarigione della malattia e fornire anche sollievo dal dolore per il cavallo, anche grazie all'ausilio di ferrature specifiche per quella determinata problematica. E'stata di fondamentale importanza durante questo percorso la collaborazione fra medico veterinario e maniscalco, i quali non devono agire in contrasto l'uno nei confronti dell'altro, bensì devono collaborare affinchè il benessere del piede del cavallo sia assicurato. Attraverso la stesura di questo elaborato, e grazie anche al tirocinio effettuato, ho potuto approfondire i rudimenti del pareggio del piede; ho potuto studiare la biomeccanica del cavallo, con particolare riferimento alle varie andare ed ai difetti che possono coinvolgerle; ho approfondito la conoscenza del piede del cavallo e delle strutture ad esso interne, andando ad analizzare ed ad applicare, per ciascun caso proposto, la ferratura più adeguata. Tutto ciò mi ha permesso di ottenere una consapevolezza maggiore del piede del cavallo e come esso dev'essere gestito in modo da garantirne la salute e prevenire l'insorgenza di patologie. Ho imparato inoltre come coadiuvare il medico veterinario durante le visite giornaliere e come assisterlo durante gli interventi chirurgici, attraverso una corretta preparazione del campo operatorio e dei ferri chirurgici. Il tirocinio e la stesura di questa tesi mi hanno aiutata molto ad approcciarmi al mondo dei cavalli e mi ha permesso di capire le diverse opportunità che questo settore può offrire.
