Passato e presente in un mito senza tempo: il Faust di Goethe

This dissertation is the study of the legend of Faust, an influential myth in the German culture and literature. It analyses the history of the myth, from its origin in the German folklore in the sixteenth century to the tragic play in two parts composed by Goethe, paying specific attention to the development of the Faust figure, who was at first considered a wicked necromancer, but later became the paradigm of human condition; and to his relationship with Mephistopheles, both ally and enemy, eager to stifle the human yearning.

Il presente elaborato intende analizzare la leggenda faustiana quale mito fondante della cultura e letteratura tedesca, a partire dalla sua origine nella tradizione popolare del sedicesimo secolo, fino alla poderosa tragedia in due parti di Goethe, con particolare attenzione all’evoluzione della figura di Faust, il quale da negromante scellerato è diventato il paradigma della condizione umana, e al suo rapporto con Mefistofele, alleato e nemico, desideroso di soffocare l’anelito umano.
