This thesis investigates the deepening of female employment and gender disparities in China. The analysis relating to the gender pay gap in the Chinese context is aimed at understanding the vision and role of women since the development of early feminisms to today, increasing the theoretical knowledge necessary in order to improve the social well-being, the female employment by eliminating the patriarchal stereotypes inherent in the Asian culture. The thesis is divided in four principal chapters: the first chapter focuses on the birth and development of feminism in China from the second half of the 1800s to the Mao’s feminism; the second analyses the cultural mix of Confucianism between the tradition and the advent of the modern state di Deng Xiaopin. the third, instead, aims to explain and understand what is the gender pay gap through a comparative analysis of disparities of employment and economic conditions relating to women in China between 2010 and 2019, taking into consideration official data of the National Bureau of Statistics of China. At the end, the last chapter describes in detail the current feminist movement under Xi Jinping, analyses how the Country has positioned on a global scale regarding the gender pay gap and finally, presents future possible outcomes.

Abstract

This thesis investigates the deepening of female employment and gender disparities in China.
