Il photovoice: una strategia per promuovere il pensiero critico e l'empowerment di comunità

The Photovoice is a particular form of participatory action research, which involves the use of photography to identify and represent the problems and resources of a specific community, with the aim of bringing about change. This technique starts from the assumption that people are the true experts of their lives and are the individuals themselves who use the camera to document their daily lives and, subsequently, start a critical dialogue that leads to the emergence of priority issues to be reported to the policy makers. The photovoice has its roots in feminist theory, in Freire's pedagogy and in documentary photography and has three main goals: a) to allow people to explain their own reality through the images they have taken; b) promote discussion through critical dialogue to bring out the problems and resources of the community; c) reach out to political decision makers and promote social action that leads to change. The aim of the following dissertation is to introduce, at a theoretical level, the Photovoice to the world of education, emphasizing its commonalities and potential applications. The thesis starts with delineating what is the role and application of photography within the human sciences, then moving on to the description of the Photovoice technique and finally, to put the Photovoice in contact with the field of education.

Il Photovoice è una particolare forma di ricerca-azione partecipata, che prevede l’utilizzo della fotografia per identificare e rappresentare problematiche e risorse di una specifica comunità, con lo scopo di apportare un cambiamento. Questa tecnica parte dal presupposto che le persone sono i veri esperti delle loro vite e sono i soggetti stessi a utilizzare la macchina fotografica per documentare la propria quotidianità e, successivamente, avviare un dialogo critico che porti all’emersione delle questioni prioritarie da riportare ai decisori politici. Il Photovoice affonda le sue radici nella filosofia femminista, nella pedagogia degli oppressi di Freire e nella fotografia documentaristica e si pone tre obiettivi principali: a) consentire alle persone di raccontare attraverso le immagini da loro scattate la propria realtà; b) promuovere il confronto attraverso il dialogo critico per far emergere le problematiche e le risorse della comunità; c) raggiungere i decisori politici e promuovere un’azione sociale che porti al cambiamento. Obiettivo della seguente dissertazione è quello di introdurre, a livello teorico, il Photovoice al mondo dell’educazione, sottolineandone i punti in comune e le potenziali applicazioni. La tesi parte con il delineare quale è stato il ruolo e l’applicazione della fotografia all’interno delle scienze umane, per poi passare alla descrizione della tecnica del Photovoice e per arrivare, infine, a mettere in contatto il Photovoice con il campo dell’educazione.
