"Donne di vita disonesta e scandalosa". La prostituzione a Torino a fine ancien regime.

The thesis is based on the socio and cultural origins, political, and institutional implications of the phenomenon of prostitution during the 18th and 19th centuries. Within the first chapter I have compiled an international panorama of international literature on the subject of prostitution. In particular I have focused on the importance of the theory of Michel Foucault regarding the 19th century on the occidental society and the classification of the deviant action comprising of prostitution. In the second part of my research I analysed the Savoy institutions formed to prevent prostitution, to protect, segregate and to cure the women involved in this activity. Invaluable and fundamental to the research was the work by Felice Amato Duboin about the edicts and charters of the epoch. After an examination of the state's role, I analysed the Catholic Churches perspective on this issue. Finally after accessing various archives, I have completed a short survey on the active prostitutes in Turin in the year of 1825 on their birthplace, average age and family origin.

La tesi indaga sulle origini socio-culturali e sulle implicazioni a livello politico e istituzionale del fenomeno della prostituzione nei secoli XVIII e XIX. Nel primo capitolo ho composto una panoramica della letteratura internazionale sul tema sottolineando l'importanza delle tesi di Michel Foucault riguardanti la società ottocentesca occidentale e la classificazione delle ¿devianze¿, compresa quindi la prostituzione . Nella seconda parte del lavoro ho analizzato le istituzioni sabaude preposte alla prevenzione, alla tutela, alla segregazione e alla cura delle donne coinvolte nel fenomeno grazie soprattutto al fondamentale testo di Felice Amato Duboin contenente gli editti e le patenti dell'epoca. Dopo la presa in esame del ruolo dello Stato, ho analizzato la visione della chiesa cattolica in materia. Infine, attraverso le preziose fonti d' archivio, ho svolto un breve sondaggio sulle prostitute attive a Torino nell'anno 1825: la loro provenienza, l'età media, le origini familiari.
