Forgotten Women: A Comparative Analysis of the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland and the USA

This thesis deals with the phenomenon of Magdalene Laundries in Ireland and the USA, focusing on the historical context, cultural representation and social impact of these institutions in their respective countries. The first chapter explores the historical context in which the Irish Magdalene Laundries developed, examining in particular the different manifestations of the culture of control in society, stressing that women were the main target of these moral impositions. The second chapter is devoted to literary interpretations of the phenomenon, discussing how many authors have courageously exposed a part of Irish history that has remained in the dark for a long time. In addition, the chapter reflects on the importance of literature and writing in processing traumas and providing tools for redemption and emancipation. The third chapter focuses on Caitríona Palmer’s book, An Affair with My Mother. The memoir is analysed from a thematic point of view and the study is enriched by an interview with the author of the book, which focuses on key issues such as adoption, the culture of control and shame, motherhood and secrecy. Finally, the last chapter is devoted to the United States and aims to provide a comparative analysis between the Irish and US phenomena.

Questa tesi si occupa del fenomeno delle Magdalene Laundries in Irlanda e negli Stati Uniti, focalizzandosi sul contesto storico, la rappresentazione culturale e l'impatto sociale di queste istituzioni nei rispettivi paesi. Il primo capitolo esplora il contesto storico in cui le Magdalene Laundries irlandesi si sono sviluppate, studiando in particolare le diverse manifestazioni della cultura del controllo nella società, sottolineando come le donne fossero il target principale di queste imposizioni morali. Il secondo capitolo si dedica alle interpretazioni letterarie del fenomeno, discutendo di come molti autori abbiano coraggiosamente esposto una parte della storia irlandese che è rimasta nell'oscurità per molto tempo. Inoltre, il capitolo riflette sull'importanza della letteratura e della scrittura nel processare traumi e fornire strumenti di redenzione e emancipazione. Il terzo capitolo si incentra sul libro di Caitríona Palmer, An Affair with My Mother. Il memoir viene analizzato da un punto di vista tematico e lo studio è arricchito da un'intervista condotta con l'autrice del libro e incentrata sui temi chiave quali l'adozione, la cultura del controllo e della vergogna, la maternità e la segretezza. Infine, l'ultimo capitolo è dedicato agli Stati Uniti e si propone di fornire un'analisi comparativa tra il fenomeno irlandese e quello statunitense.
