Itinerario letterario nella Manchester Vittoriana

My paper is a literary journey into Victorian Manchester and the period of the Industrial Revolution. Divided into three chapters: first chapter of historical character, second chapter of literary character and third chapter of touristic character. In the first chapter, a general historical picture is presented, focusing on the living conditions of the proletariat. I have only mentioned the authors (Gaskell, Engels) who have characterized those places and that historical period, to anticipate the second chapter. The second chapter deals with authors who have left their mark on Victorian Manchester; I analysed in particular: Elizabeth Gaskell, through the work "Mary Barton" of 1848, Charles Dickens, through the work "Hard Times" of 1854 and John Ruskin, through the work "The Storm-Cloud Of the Nineteenth Century" of 1884; I brought a small biography and analyzed the main themes that can be found in the works of these authors. The third chapter is touristic, as it provides a cultural itinerary in today’s Manchester, to follow in the footsteps of the authors that I analyzed and other points of cultural interest in the city, Based also on my experiences during my Erasmus in the city of Manchester during the year 2023/2024.

Il mio elaborato è un percorso letterario nella Manchester Vittoriana e l'epoca della rivoluzione industriale. Diviso in tre capitoli: primo capitolo di carattere storico, secondo capitolo di carattere letterario e terzo capitolo di carattere turistico. All'interno del primo capitolo è presentato un quadro storico generale, con focus sulle condizioni di vita del proletariato. Viene posto solo un accenno agli autori (Gaskell, Engels) che hanno caratterizzato quei luoghi e quel periodo storico, per anticipare il secondo capitolo. Il secondo capitolo tratta degli autori che hanno lasciato un segno nella Manchester Vittoriana; ho analizzato in particolar modo: Elizabeth Gaskell, attraverso l'opera "Mary Barton" del 1848, Charles Dickens, attraverso l'opera "Tempi Difficili" del 1854 e John Ruskin, attraverso l'opera "La nube tempestosa del 1884; ho riportato una piccola biografia e analizzato i temi principali che si possono ritrovare nelle opere di questi autori. Il terzo capitolo è invece di carattere turistico, poichè fornisce un itinerario culturale nella Manchester odierna, per seguire le orme degli autori che ho analizzato e altri punti di interesse culturale nella città, basandomi anche sulle esperienze fatte durante il mio Erasmus svolto nella città di Manchester nel corso dell'anno 2023/2024.
