George Eliot's Feminist Vision: Rewriting Women's Roles in "Middlemarch".

This thesis analyzes the figure of George Eliot in light of her concept of feminism, with a particular focus on how her masterpiece "Middlemarch" challenges gender roles in Victorian England. After a brief biography of the author, the social context in which she lived will be examined, highlighting her critical attitude towards a society in which she did not feel represented. The second chapter will offer an analysis of the novel, concentrating on the role of women and Eliot’s critique of the social restrictions imposed on them. Through characters such as Dorothea Brooke, the author promotes female emancipation through education and self-determination. Finally, the negative judgment that Eliot often reserved for her contemporary female writers will be explored, as well as how her personal vision contrasted with the conventions of Victorian society. The thesis will ultimately highlight how Eliot anticipates key themes of the modern debate, offering a reflection on the relationship between women, ambition and social constraints.

Dopo una breve biografia dell’autrice, verrà esaminato il contesto sociale in cui visse, evidenziando il suo atteggiamento critico nei confronti di una società in cui non si sentiva rappresentata. Il secondo capitolo offrirà un’analisi del romanzo, concentrandosi sul ruolo delle donne e sulla critica di Eliot alle restrizioni sociali a loro imposte. Attraverso personaggi come Dorothea Brooke, l’autrice promuove l’emancipazione femminile attraverso l’educazione e l’autodeterminazione. Infine, verrà approfondito il giudizio spesso negativo che Eliot riservava alle sue colleghe contemporanee e il modo in cui la sua visione personale si confrontava con le convenzioni della società vittoriana. La tesi evidenzierà infine come Eliot anticipi temi fondamentali del dibattito moderno, offrendo una riflessione sul rapporto tra donne, ambizione e vincoli sociali.
