Romanticism in Contemporary Songwriting: The Case of “Folklore” by Taylor Swift

How many times have we heard the word “romanticism” associated to romance or love stories? I assume many times. But is that what it really refers to?. This dissertation focuses on the Romantic period, an artistic and intellectual movement originated in the late 18th century in Europe. Although the movement ended in the 19th century, its core values (the celebration of emotions, nature and individual experiences) still influence modern culture, literature, art and even music. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the impact that the Romantic period has had on contemporary songwriting, especially in the album “Folklore” by Taylor Swift (2020), by identifying similar themes and influences in the works of the American song-writer. The first chapter gives a historical background of the Romantic period and presents the Romantic poets. The second chapter introduces the album that I chose to analyze, explains the writing process of it and the background of the artist. Finally, the third chapter puts in contrast some of the tracks of the album with Romantic poems.

Quante volte abbiamo abbiamo sentito la parola “romanticismo” associata al fatto di essere romantico o alle storie d’amore?. Presumo molte volte. Ma è davvero a questo che se riferisce? Questa tesi si concentra sul periodo Romantico: un movimento artistico e intellettuale nato alla fine del XVIII secolo in Europa. Sebbene il movimento si sia concluso nel XIX secolo, i suoi valori fondamentali (celebrazione delle emozioni, della natura e delle esperienze individuali) influenzano ancora la cultura moderna, la letteratura, l’arte e persino la musica. L’obbiettivo di questa tesi è analizzare l’impatto che il periodo Romantico ha avuto sulla scrittura di canzoni contemporanee, in particolare sull'album “Folklore” di Taylor Swift (2020), identificando temi simili e influenze nelle opere della cantautrice americana. Il primo capitolo fornisce un contesto storico del periodo Romantico e presenta i poeti Romantici. Il secondo capitolo introduce l’album che ho scelto di analizzare, spiega il processo di scrittura e il background dell’artista. Infine, il terzo capitolo compara alcune delle tracce dell’album con le poesie Romantiche.
