Siracusa medievale: storia e spunti di valorizzazione turistica della città aretusea

In this dissertation with a historiographical character, the history, events and personalities that during the Middle Ages helped shape Syracuse as it is now will be narrated in an orderly and critical manner. Through meticulous bibliographical research, the paper unites the events that took place in the city of Arethusa from the 5th to the 15th century. Beginning with Cassiodorus' letters reporting the events of the Ostrogothic reign, the first chapter, will follow the events of Syracuse up to the conquest and life under the Eastern Empire. The next chapter, thanks to the source of the monk Theodosius, describes the siege of the city by the Arabs and the subsequent political and cultural changes fulfilled because of their conquest, a period about which little is known. The third chapter begins by describing the events that led first to a conquest at the hands of the Normans and later--by hereditary claims--to the Swabian reign of Frederick II and his loyal Syracuse. In the fourth and final chapter, the events of the famous Sicilian Vespers are recounted, and the Reginal Chamber between the 13th and 15th centuries is treated, which again brought the city of Arethusa to play an important role within Sicilian history, concluding with an architectural example that best represents the slavish flow of Syracuse's history.

In questa dissertazione dal carattere storiografico sarà narrata, in maniera ordinata e critica, la storia, gli eventi e i personaggi che durante il medioevo hanno contribuito a formare Siracusa per com’è adesso. Attraverso una ricerca bibliografica meticolosa, l’elaborato unisce le vicende intercorse nella citta aretusea dal V al XV secolo. Partendo dalle lettere di Cassiodoro che riportano le vicende del regno ostrogoto, il primo capitolo, seguirà gli avvenimenti di Siracusa fino alla conquista e alla vita sotto l’Impero d’Oriente. Il capitolo successivo, grazie alla fonte del monaco Teodosio, descrive l’assedio della città da parte degli arabi e le successive modifiche politiche e culturali adempiute a causa della loro conquista, periodo della quale si sa ben poco. Il terzo capitolo comincia descrivendo gli eventi che portarono prima ad una conquista per mano dei normanni e dopo - per rivendicazioni ereditarie - al regno svevo di Federico II e alla sua fedelissima Siracusa. Nel quarto ed ultimo capitolo, narrate le vicende dei famosi Vespri siciliani, viene trattata la Camera reginale tra il XIII e il XV secolo che portò nuovamente la città aretusea a rivestire un ruolo importante all’interno della storia sicula, concludendo con un esempio architettonico che maggiormente rappresenta il pedissequo scorrere della storia di Siracusa.
