Feminism in literature: the contribution and vision of the writer Virginia Woolf The paper focuses on the writer's influence in the social and literary context of modernism. Following an introduction on the definition of the term ‘feminism’, exploring its nature as a social movement and/or ideology, the thesis illustrates the position of women in the English historical, social and legal context between the late 19th and early 20th century (the period in which Virginia Woolf lived). I trace the history in the various stages of feminism, the so-called ‘waves’, from the suffragettes to the 1970s, highlighting their struggles and internal debate. Subsequently, I examined the literary context in which Virginia Woolf was formed, with a focus on the modernist movement and the stream-of-consciousness technique. Through the detailed analysis of the contents and writing style of the two essays: ‘A Room of One's Own’ and ‘The Three Guineas’ by the writer, published in 1929 and 1938 respectively, the themes of feminism on the importance of economic independence, the criticism of patriarchal institutions and the need for a private space for the expression of female potential were emphasised. A specific paragraph was devoted to a comparison between Virginia Woolf and the Italian writer Sibilla Aleramo, her contemporary, author of the novel ‘A woman’ and a leading figure in the women's emancipation movement in Italy.

Il femminismo in letteratura: il contributo e la visione della scrittrice Virginia Woolf Il lavoro si concentra sull’influenza della scrittrice nel contesto sociale e letterario del modernismo. A seguito dell'introduzione sulla definizione del termine "femminismo", esplorandone la natura di movimento sociale e/o ideologia, la tesi illustra la posizione della donna nel contesto storico, sociale e giuridico inglese tra la fine dell'Ottocento e l'inizio del Novecento (periodo in cui visse Virginia Woolf). Ripercorrendo la storia nelle varie fasi del femminismo, le cosiddette "ondate", dalle suffragette agli anni Settanta, evidenziando le loro battaglie e il dibattito interno. Successivamente, ho esaminato il contesto letterario in cui si formò Virginia Woolf, con particolare attenzione al movimento modernista e alla tecnica del flusso di coscienza. Attraverso l'analisi dettagliata dei contenuti e dello stile di scrittura dei due saggi: "Una stanza tutta per sé" e "Le tre ghinee" della scrittrice, pubblicati rispettivamente nel 1929 e nel 1938 si sottolineano le tematiche del femminismo sull’importanza di un’indipendenza economica, la critica alle istituzioni patriarcali e la necessità di uno spazio privato per l’espressione del potenziale femminile. Un paragrafo specifico è stato dedicato al confronto tra Virginia Woolf e la scrittrice italiana Sibilla Aleramo, sua contemporanea, autrice del romanzo "Una donna" e figura di spicco nel movimento di emancipazione femminile in Italia.
