Le pissidi in impasto nel mondo centro-italico fra VIII e V secolo a.C.: classificazione, distribuzione e significato.

This research is based on the analysis of a ceramic form widespread in central Italy between the end of the 8th and the beginning of the 5th century BC: the impasto pyxes. After an initial phase of collecting published material and cataloging the identified pieces, a typological organization of both the calices and the lids enabled the examination of their geographical and chronological distribution, with particular focus to the dynamics of diffusion and the contacts between different areas of central Italy. The study of the specimens, mainly coming from funerary contexts, enabled a deeper understanding of their role and the formulation of hypotheses about the meaning of these objects, highlighting not only their practical function but also their relevance in funerary rituals and their symbolic value. The almost exclusive presence of pyxes in burials with rich or high-status grave goods suggests, in fact, their use as status indicators and instruments of representation, adopted and reinterpreted locally by the elites of different central Italian cultures.

Questa ricerca si basa sull’analisi di una forma ceramica diffusa in centro Italia tra la fine dell'VIII e gli inizi del V secolo a.C.: le pissidi in impasto. Dopo una prima fase di raccolta del materiale edito e catalogazione dei pezzi individuati, attraverso un'organizzazione tipologica sia dei calici che dei coperchi, è stato possibile esaminare la loro distribuzione geografica e cronologica, con particolare attenzione alle dinamiche di diffusione e ai contatti tra le diverse aree dell’Italia centrale. Lo studio degli esemplari, provenienti principalmente da contesti tombali, ha consentito di approfondire il ruolo e di formulare ipotesi sul significato di questi oggetti, evidenziandone non solo la funzione pratica, ma anche la rilevanza nei rituali funebri e il loro valore simbolico. La presenza quasi esclusiva delle pissidi in sepolture con ricchi corredi o di alto rango suggerisce, infatti, il loro utilizzo come indicatori di status e strumenti di rappresentazione, adottati e rielaborati localmente dalle élite di diverse culture centro-italiche.
