La distinzione di genere: origine e sviluppo dal punto di vista della linguistica storica e nel dibattito attuale

The thesis relates the main hypothesis about the origin and evolution of grammatical gender, from Proto-Indo-European to modern Italian. The first chapter traces the development of the gender system in relation to the morphological transformations that have defined the structure of Italian, highlighting how gender evolved as languages transitioned from ancient to modern forms, with a particular focus on some morphological structures in Latin that reflect its linguistic history in the perspective of grammatical gender. The second chapter focuses on the contemporary debate regarding the relationship between language and gender in biology and in society, intertwining linguistic and sociological theories. In particular, it discusses views that consider gender as a social construct, alongside traditional conceptions that view gender as a biological fact on on side, as a grammatical one on the other side. The chapter also seeks to understand the movement toward more inclusive language, with a particular focus on proposals for revising the linguistic system to fairly represent all gender identities. The third chapter is dedicated to the analysis of emerging trends in youth language, where the theme of gender is treated in an extremely innovative way: various linguistic phenomena are explored, including those aimed at indicating a neutral gender. The chapter further examines how these trends reflect changes in social and political dynamics related to gender and its representations. The thesis integrates historical, linguistic and sociocultural analysis, with the aim of providing a comprehensive view of the linguistic and social implications of gender. In particular, it seeks to understand how linguistic gender interacts with cultural and social transformations and whether the innovations and challenges related to this topic enrich the field of contemporary linguistic studies.

Nell’elaborato vengono esposte le ipotesi prevalenti riguardo all'origine e all’evoluzione del genere grammaticale partendo dal Proto-Indoeuropeo fino all’italiano moderno. Il primo capitolo ripercorre la formazione del sistema di genere concentrandosi sulle trasformazioni morfologiche che hanno definito la struttura dell’italiano, evidenziando come il genere si sia articolato nel passaggio dalle lingue antiche alle moderne, con un’attenzione particolare ad alcune strutture morfologiche del latino. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sul dibattito contemporaneo riguardo al rapporto tra genere linguistico e genere sociale, intrecciando teorie linguistiche e sociologiche. In particolare, vengono discusse le visioni che considerano il genere come una costruzione sociale, insieme alle concezioni tradizionali che vedono il genere come un dato biologico da un lato, una struttura grammaticale dall’altro. Si cerca di comprendere anche la richiesta attuale, e il movimento che la sostiene, d’un linguaggio più inclusivo, con particolare attenzione alle proposte d’intervento nel sistema linguistico per rappresentare in modo equo tutte le identità di genere. Il terzo capitolo è dedicato all’analisi delle tendenze emergenti nel linguaggio giovanile, dove il tema del genere è trattato in modo estremamente innovativo: si esplorano vari fenomeni linguistici, compresi quelli volti ad indicare un genere neutro. Il capitolo esamina, inoltre, come queste tendenze riflettano il cambiamento delle dinamiche sociali e politiche riguardanti il genere e le sue rappresentazioni. La tesi cerca d’integrare analisi storica, linguistica e socioculturale, con l’intento di offrire una visione che faccia interagire le implicazioni linguistiche e quelle sociali del genere. In particolare, si cerca di comprendere come il genere linguistico interagisca con le trasformazioni culturali e sociali e se il panorama degli studi linguistici contemporanei venga arricchito dalle sfide legate a questa tematica e dalle innovazioni che al riguardo sono proposte da varie istanze sociali.
