Oltre i confini del genere: il binarismo e il terzo genere

The notion of gender has evolved over time, from a rigid and binary concept to a complex reality that includes multiple identities. This thesis, Beyond the Boundaries of Gender: Binarism and the Third Gender, explores these transformations, going beyond the traditional male-female dichotomy and analyzing the third gender in different cultures. The first chapter examines the historical and theoretical evolution of the concept of gender, distinguishing between biological sex and social construction. Gender relations and differences are also analyzed to understand the dynamics that determine individual identities. The second chapter delves into the theme of intersexuality and the third gender, focusing on the figures of the Italian femminielli, the Indian Hijra, and the Samoan Fa’afafine. The analysis of these cases allows us to broaden the discussion on non-binary gender identities, highlighting alternative ways of living and expressing gender outside of Western models. In the third chapter, the focus shifts to the figure of the Bardache, belonging to the North American indigenous populations. These individuals, who embody a fusion of male and female identities, represent an interesting example of third gender and play fundamental roles within their communities. This thesis investigates the plurality of genders and the fluidity of identities, questioning rigid conceptions and promoting a more inclusive and global vision of gender as a social construction, experienced and interpreted in different ways depending on cultural contexts.

La nozione di genere si è evoluta nel tempo, passando da un concetto rigido e binario a una realtà complessa che include molteplici identità. Questa tesi, Oltre i confini del genere: binarismo e terzo genere, esplora tali trasformazioni, andando oltre la tradizionale dicotomia maschile-femminile e analizzando il terzo genere in diverse culture. Il primo capitolo esamina l’evoluzione storica e teorica del concetto di genere, distinguendo tra sesso biologico e costruzione sociale. Vengono inoltre analizzate le relazioni e le differenze di genere per comprendere le dinamiche che determinano le identità individuali. Il secondo capitolo approfondisce il tema dell’intersessualità e del terzo genere, soffermandosi sulle figure dei femminielli italiani, delle Hijra indiane e delle Fa’afafine samoane. L’analisi di questi casi permette di ampliare la discussione sulle identità di genere non binarie, evidenziando modalità alternative di vivere ed esprimere il genere al di fuori dei modelli occidentali. Nel terzo capitolo, l’attenzione si sposta sulla figura dei Bardache, appartenenti alle popolazioni indigene nordamericane. Questi individui, che incarnano una fusione di identità maschili e femminili, rappresentano un interessante esempio di terzo genere e svolgono ruoli fondamentali all'interno delle loro comunità. Questa tesi indaga la pluralità dei generi e la fluidità delle identità, mettendo in discussione concezioni rigide e promuovendo una visione più inclusiva e globale del genere come costruzione sociale, vissuta e interpretata in modi differenti a seconda dei contesti culturali.
