La traduzione italiana della violenza di A Song of Ice and Fire

The fantasy genre holds a central role in contemporary pop culture, it influences the media and reaches a global audience thanks to, among other factors, translation. When talking about translation, we do not just simply refer to a language transfer, but to a rather complex process of cultural mediation that profoundly affects the reception of a piece of work. In this context, the translator plays a crucial role, as his choices, between fidelity to the source text or adaptation to the expectations of the target audience, will be decisive. This thesis analyzes the Italian translation of the violence in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, focusing on Sergio Altieri's version for Mondadori. Martin's work differs from the rest of the fantasy canon for a detailed and stark depiction of violence, and the study aims, therefore, to examine how these elements have been rendered in Italian, examining any modifications, mitigations or amplifications. The first chapter provides a theoretical framework on translation and the main translation strategies, the concept of equivalence and the role of the translator. It also analyzes the distinctive features of the fantasy genre and the function of violence in Martin's saga. The second chapter describes the adopted methodology, based on the use of the software Sketch Engine to identify the violent phrases in the source text and compare them with the Italian translation. The analysis focuses on the translation choices employed and their impact for the Italian audience, comparing them with the effect evoked in the original audience and with other available translation options. Finally, the concluding chapter summarizes the results of the analysis and discusses the effect of the translation choices regarding the perception of violence in the target text. The research aims to understand whether violence can be considered a cultural taboo in the Italian context and whether and how violence has been modified in translation.

Il genere fantasy occupa un ruolo centrale nella cultura popolare contemporanea, influenza i media e raggiunge un pubblico globale grazie, tra gli altri fattori, alla traduzione. Quando si parla di traduzione non ci si riferisce solo a un semplice trasferimento linguistico, ma a un processo complesso di mediazione culturale che incide profondamente sulla ricezione di un’opera. In questo contesto, il traduttore ha un ruolo cruciale, poiché le sue scelte, tra la fedeltà al testo di partenza o all’adattamento rispetto alle aspettative del pubblico di arrivo, saranno decisive. Questa tesi analizza la traduzione italiana della violenza in A Song of Ice and Fire di George R.R. Martin, concentrandosi sulla versione di Sergio Altieri per Mondadori. L’opera di Martin si distingue dal resto del canone fantasy per una rappresentazione dettagliata e cruda della violenza, e lo studio si propone, quindi, di esaminare in che modo tali elementi siano stati resi in italiano, valutando eventuali modifiche, attenuazioni o amplificazioni. Il primo capitolo fornisce un quadro teorico sulla traduzione e sulle principali strategie traduttive, sul concetto di equivalenza e sul ruolo del traduttore. Inoltre, analizza le caratteristiche distintive del genere fantasy e la funzione della violenza nella saga di Martin. Il secondo capitolo descrive la metodologia adottata, basata sull’uso del software Sketch Engine per individuare le espressioni violente nell’originale e confrontarle con la traduzione italiana. L’analisi si concentra sulle scelte traduttive adottate e sul loro impatto per il pubblico italiano, confrontandole con l’effetto nel pubblico originale e con le altre possibilità di traduzione a disposizione. Infine, il capitolo conclusivo sintetizza i risultati dell’analisi e riflette sull’effetto delle scelte traduttive riguardo la percezione della violenza nel testo di arrivo. La ricerca mira a comprendere se la violenza possa essere considerata un tabù culturale nel contesto italiano e se e in che modo la violenza sia stata modificata nella traduzione.
