Le associazioni private ad Atene nell’età tardo-ellenistica e romana. Autorappresentazione e paesaggio epigrafico.

This work focuses on private associations in Athens during the period from Late Hellenism to the Severan age. The aim of the study is to explore both the organizational and institutional aspects of these associations, as well as their self-representation by means of the inscriptions before the Athenian public and local and Roman authorities. Key indicators of their self-presentation, such as the types of inscriptions, the language used, and other distinctive features of their epigraphic habit, have been analyzed. Another key aspect of their self-representation is the choice of locations for displaying their inscriptions, which contributed to the broader epigraphic landscape of Athens and Attica. The thesis is organized into three chapters: the first introduces the characteristics of private associations, the second provides an analysis and commentary on the inscriptions, and the third examines the locations where these inscriptions were placed. The analysis reveals that, while the associations reflect the social changes over the centuries, adapting their epigraphic practices to communication needs and political shifts, they also maintain a strong connection, both in their organization and in their communication, with the long-standing traditions of Athens.

Oggetto di studio di questa tesi sono le associazioni private ad Atene nel periodo compreso tra il tardo ellenismo e l’età severiana. Lo studio è volto a comprendere sia alcuni aspetti sostanziali delle associazioni, quali la loro organizzazione e composizione, sia il loro modo di autorappresentarsi tramite l’epigrafia agli occhi della popolazione di Atene e delle istituzioni e autorità locali e romane. Come indicatori importanti del modo di presentarsi delle associazioni, sono stati esaminati le tipologie di iscrizioni, il linguaggio impiegato e altri elementi caratteristici dell’habitus epigrafico di questi gruppi. Altro aspetto di primaria importanza per l’autorappresentazione delle associazioni private è quello dei luoghi in cui sceglievano di esporre le proprie epigrafi, che si inserivano nel paesaggio epigrafico di Atene e dell’Attica. La tesi si articola in un primo capitolo di presentazione delle caratteristiche delle associazioni private, un secondo capitolo dedicato all’analisi e al commento delle iscrizioni, presentate per tipologia, e un terzo capitolo in cui si esaminano i luoghi di esposizione. L’analisi dimostra che da un lato le associazioni rispecchiano le evoluzioni della società nell’arco dei secoli esaminati, adattando la propria pratica epigrafica alle esigenze comunicative e ai cambiamenti del quadro politico, dall’altro mantengono una forte affinità sia a livello organizzativo sia sul piano della comunicazione con la tradizione secolare della città di Atene.
