Orgoglio nero. Il Black Panther Party e la lotta per l’affermazione dell’identità afroamericana

The essay aims to analyze the Black Panther Party movement, an African-American political organization born in the 1960s in the United States and which managed to expand globally. The Party was founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California. Its aim was to eliminate the disparities that affected the African-American component of the American population, often by resorting to aggression. The essay will place emphasis on the theme of violence that accompanies the entire African-American history, from the arrival of the first slaves in the New Continent up to the present day, while also talking about the virtuous projects initiated by the Black Panther Party such as the Free Breakfast for Children, the Community Clinic and other social assistance initiatives. It will also talk about the lives of the most important members within the Party, mainly Huey Newton, Bobby Seale and Eldridge Cleaver, the leading figures of the BPP. It will also analyze the role that women played in the organization which was one of the few, within Black Power, to allow women to hold key positions. Despite this, sexism remained well rooted within the Party, preventing true equality between men and women. Another topic covered is the International Section that the BPP managed to open in Algiers and which was managed by Eldridge Cleaver, who allowed the Panthers to build global relations with other organizations that fought for the Revolution. Finally will also be discussed the role that the police and FBI played in hindering the spread of the ideas and structures of the Black Panther Party, which immediately began to infiltrate within the Party as it was deemed dangerous for national security. The objective of the essay is not to establish whether the work of the Black Panther Party was a success or not but to highlight the lights and shadows of the great project of the Panthers and its leaders.

La tesi mira ad analizzare il movimento del Black Panther Party, un’organizzazione politica afroamericana nata negli anni 60 negli Stati Uniti e che è riuscita ad espandersi a livello globale. Il Partito venne fondato da Huey Newton e Bobby Seale ad Oakland, in California. Il suo scopo era quello di eliminare le disparità che colpivano la componente afroamericana della popolazione americana, spesso facendo ricorso all’aggressività. Nella tesi verrà posto l’accento sul tema della violenza che accompagna tutta la storia afroamericana, dall’arrivo dei primi schiavi nel Nuovo Continente fino ai giorni d’oggi, parlando però anche dei progetti virtuosi iniziati dal Black Panther Party come il Free Breakfast for Children, il Community Clinic e altre iniziative di assistenza sociale. Si parlerà anche della vita dei componenti più importanti all’interno del Partito, principalmente Huey Newton, Bobby Seale ed Eldridge Cleaver le figure portanti del BPP. Si analizzerà anche il ruolo che le donne svolsero nell’organizzazione che fu una delle poche, all’interno del Black Power, a permettere a quest’ultime di rivestire posizioni chiave. Nonostante questo il sessismo rimaneva ben radicato all’interno del Partito impedendo una vera uguaglianza tra uomo e donna. Un altro argomento trattato è quello della Sezione Internazionale che il BPP riuscì ad aprire ad Algeri e che fu gestita da Eldridge Cleaver, che permise alle Pantere di tessere relazioni globali con altre organizzazioni che si battevano per la Rivoluzione. Infine verrà anche trattato il ruolo che polizia e FBI svolsero nell’ostacolare la diffusione delle idee e delle strutture del Black Panther Party, i quali iniziarono ad infiltrarsi fin da subito all’interno del Partito in quanto giudicato pericoloso per la sicurezza nazionale. L’obbiettivo della tesi non è quello di stabilire se l’operato del Black Panther Party fu un successo o meno ma quello di evidenziare luci ed ombre del grande progetto delle Pantere e dei suoi leader.
