This thesis explores the changing dynamics of Sino-Hollywood relationships in the global cinema business. With China rising as a significant cinema market and Hollywood studios looking to expand their presence in China, co-productions have become key vehicles for cultural interchange, creative negotiation, and commercial benefit. This study will look at how these collaborations affect market penetration both domestically and globally, as well as the major aspects that contribute to their success in the global film industry. The research uses a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses, such as a historical review of previous co-productions, a case study of The Farewell (2019), and a structured audience questionnaire that compares Chinese and foreign points of view. The theoretical framework is based on film economics, transnational collaboration theory, and globalisation studies, offering a multidisciplinary perspective on the challenges and opportunities of these film partnerships. The findings show that commercial and legal issues drive market penetration, but cultural and linguistic elements have a substantial impact on audience response. Successful co-productions strike a balance between economic imperatives and accurate cultural depiction, appealing to both Chinese and foreign viewers. Furthermore, films with powerful plots, cross-cultural appeal, and well-negotiated creative autonomy tend to be the most successful. This study contributes to the deeper discussion on transnational film partnerships by providing insights for filmmakers, legislators, and industry stakeholders. It emphasises the significance of combining commercial goals with cultural authenticity to further the internationalisation of Chinese cinema and foster meaningful intercultural interaction through film. Finally, this study emphasises the potential for Sino-Hollywood co-productions to serve as cultural bridges, promoting both business success and worldwide cultural interchange.
