Empatia e Regolazione delle Emozioni: il ruolo del contagio emotivo

This thesis investigates the interrelation between empathy, emotional contagion and emotional regulation, proposing a multidisciplinary and multi-method approach. Starting from a review of the psychological literature, the work explores the conceptual evolution of these phenomena, analyzing their theoretical basis and the main underlying mechanisms. In the first chapter, the constructs of empathy, emotional contagion and emotional regulation are examined, with the aim of clarifying their specificities and mutual connections. The second chapter is dedicated to affective neuroscience, with particular reference to Jaak Panksepp's theory of the seven emotional systems, which allows us to understand the neuroevolutionary basis of empathic processes. Finally, the third chapter presents an empirical psychobiological investigation conducted using tools such as HRV, EDA and psychometric tests, aimed at measuring empathy, emotional contagion and affective regulation, as well as identifying the individual characteristics that influence these processes. The results offer significant insights to deepen the understanding of emotional and relational dynamics, contributing to the scientific debate on fundamental issues for clinical and emotion psychology.

La presente tesi indaga l’interrelazione tra empatia, contagio emotivo e regolazione emotiva, proponendo un approccio multidisciplinare e multi-metodo. Partendo da una revisione della letteratura psicologica, il lavoro esplora l’evoluzione concettuale di questi fenomeni, analizzandone le basi teoriche e i principali meccanismi sottostanti. Nel primo capitolo vengono esaminati i costrutti di empatia, contagio emotivo e regolazione emotiva, con l’obiettivo di chiarirne le specificità e le reciproche connessioni. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato alle neuroscienze affettive, con particolare riferimento alla teoria dei sette sistemi emotivi di Jaak Panksepp, che consente di comprendere le basi neuroevolutive dei processi empatici. Infine, il terzo capitolo presenta un’indagine empirica psicobiologica condotta attraverso l’uso di strumenti quali HRV, EDA e test psicometrici, finalizzata a misurare empatia, contagio emotivo e regolazione affettiva, nonché a identificare le caratteristiche individuali che influenzano tali processi. I risultati offrono spunti significativi per approfondire la comprensione delle dinamiche emotive e relazionali, contribuendo al dibattito scientifico su tematiche fondamentali per la psicologia clinica e delle emozioni.
